Questlove’s opinion of Michael Jackson and his music is irrelevant. Walking around with a struggle afro doesn’t make you pro-black. Also, Quest was the same person who geeked about being inside Michael’s Las Vegas “home.” Apparently, he has his fanatical moments.
The doc was enjoyable.

Questlove on Thriller last year, which actually expands on his latest post: "I was like: “im really gonna rock this 40th anniversary post” (Thriller was 11/30/82 & its title track video: 12/2/83) every anniversary I gave arguments in terms of it successfully changing a sound (oberheim/fairlight/linn programming was a new sonic language for music), i gave talking points on how Thriller had to muscle in equality for access to a platform like MTV that an act like Rick James (who was clearly a rock starah) was denied & caused a turnaround of unfortunate events because of that ceiling (well in this weird upside down we live in now…..watching he-who-I-won’t-name spin out of control, it’s hard to even speculate what events woulda went down had MTV embraced Rick & gave him the respect he was due (I mean Rick’s song finally made MTV in 1990 via Hammer propelling him to 14 million from a SAMPLE)—I even still stand by the fact that Thriller revolutionized street vending —before the madness I could walk down (& have touring w my dad) any mainstreet hood USA & clearly see a before/after effect of the staggering amount of merch sold in the name of the album: posters/button/pocketbooks/notepads/stickers/tshirts/jackets/socks/bookbags/lunchboxes: adults/kids/white/black/all in between! So CRAZY the amount of $$$ made to get a piece of history. I gave the album’s rerelease rotation the past two weeks to see if it gave me that same feeling I get when I play old Stevie or PE or Miles. I dunno—I’m conflicted: I mean Thriller switched the conversation from quality to QUANTITY. Yes as art Thriller still stands, but the reasons snobs can be “Off The Wall was better” is because we only talk about what Thriller ACHIEVED not what it was. Like it’s THIS moment in which we decided to only celebrate the winners. We never talk about it as art. I mean MJ was justified for he was talented: but we now we celebrate marginally talented winners w good tik tok numbers. Thriller made us only look at winners. Sadly there is a Scarface element here (cheer knowing this won’t end well 😞) 27 yrs later we know what the burden of Thriller will bring. It caused us happiness…much to his detriment & demise. Kinda wish it never happened 😞 #Thriller40." http://instagram.com/p/Cls_A_9r5w5 The response to his post here is so over the top. It's like Michael Jackson fans are automatically set to "attack" when someone says something ambiguous or different.

Why is it over the top? This is what discussion is about. He says something publicly and then lo and behold, maybe not everyone will agree and people might voice that disagreement and comment on his opinion.
He'd be free to talk about Thriller as art and not as how many copies it sold. Who stops him? It's actually up to them, music historians and talking heads to do that. I'd be most happy if they did. But he didn't. Instead he put out these posts those only seems to regret that it was so successful, but it still doesn't talk about it as art.

Dick Zimmerman talked about Michael's concern of being scratched by the tiger cub. I agree with Constantinos, discussing about the Thriller album cover on the Thriller 40 doc was missing. No mention of Vincent Price either.
