Definitely not, the album may suffer from being overplayed (I find it hard to listen to the song Thriller, as it has been played to death and sounds too familiar for me, but that does not take away its power and glory). Unlike many albums of the era, it has no filler - every song belongs. If every major hit and critically acclaimed album was like Thriller - filler would not exist.
Lady in my Life and Baby be mine both sound great, the first song has some of his most beautiful singing I have ever heard, his voice sounds like silk!
The hit singles are all still powerful, Billie Jean and Beat it, Human Nature, Thriller, WBSS are all flawless pop and with a slightly harder edge. As in all his finest work Michael's voice is totally on point and gives me goosebumps.
PYT is a bit silly - but still very enjoyable and again Michael's voice (I'll take you theerree - I wannna Love Youuuu) just soars and lifts this song way above the "Just a song" level.
Thriller is great because it does that, the album is a Thriller and it will Thrill you!

I struggle with the concept that Thriller is overrated. It’s like saying First Man on The Moon or the invention of the light bulb is overrated just because bigger things have happened since then. Plus, I’d say if you just listen to Thriller without any preconceptions and just lay back and listen, it’s pretty much perfect. Yes, there’s the stunning songs like BJ and Beat It, and I’d say WBSS should be included also. Plus Himan Nature, Thriller and I think PYT, TGIM and Lady in My Life are all brilliant also. All genre defining, all sung beautifully. Sequentially it all just works to make 40 odd minutes of just taking life to another level. Yes, he was to surpass it but I’d argue that as a single album of life enhancing music, it’s perfect and fully deserves its place as the best selling album of all time. I totally see what you mean, people will say its the best, because it is the most well known of all his albums and was the biggest hit. In most cases this is undeserved (Like Prince - sorry I know, but the General Public always say Purple Rain was his best album as it was the most well known and biggest hit like Thriller was to MJ, but in reality we all know the best album of his was 1999 or Sign o the Times, like you Bad or Dangerous was Michael's best (And some may even say HIStory was). Prince said it well "People only dig it because it was a hit" and of course Michael himself was always trying to better Thriller, and he came close - but at the end of the day, no subsequent album of his or anyone elses came close to that success (I don't count record club penny sales of Eagles Greatest Hits). I mean this is on time where many fans and casual fans and General Public may agree.

Bad is my favourite album, but I can see why Thriller is what it is. I don't hold any bitterness towards it. A worthy world champion.

Bad is great, but there's nothing on it that holds a candle to Billie Jean.

WBSS and Human Nature are "two good album tracks"? WBSS is one of my favorite songs by any artist ever. It's simply genius. It definitely is a better song than Beat It or Thriller. Just because they had videos it doesn't make them the better songs.
I can't be alone with that opinion because I remember when Madonna gave her eulogy to MJ, in that speech she said something along the lines how "we all envied the songs he wrote, we wished we would have written Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". Paraphrasing but it was something about her envying WBSS. LOL.
And Human Nature is a fantastic song too. I too many people consider it their favorite of the album. Late to this thread as well...Agree 100%. I record music....And tried to get that WBSS flavor so many times....and always failed. You can't duplicate that gorgeousness. I would argue it's even better than DSTYGE.

Nope. DSTYGE kicks all kinds of ass over WBSS. Hmmm.... WBSS with the "lift your head up high" part nips it for me.

in my opinion it is overrated. BUT it still one of the best albums of all time right next to off the wall. Michael was already an superstar but when thriller came out follow by the moonwalk at motown 25, etc it made him much more an superstar in the rest of his adult life. not only thriller but the rest of his albums as well.

Think I'll have to select "A little".
Musically, Thriller isn't overrated and is as close to perfectly recorded as you're ever likely to get.
Billie Jean says it all on that score alone. I think Thriller has something for everyone on it.
But what made Thriller break the all time sales records was really the Thriller video itself. That one project literally brought in more sales than all the other singles, videos and the Moonwalk did before it.
Without the Landis directed Thriller, the album would have fallen short of the then album record sales.
As Michael himself noted, by autumn 1983 Thriller had sold 8million copies (USA) and the global tally was at 13million in September 1983.
One last roll of the dice left - Thriller.
As Michael noted, "According to statistics, the Thriller film and the release of the single resulted in 14 million additional album and tape sales within a six month period."
People forget that sales had slowed in a very significant way before the film was released and everything else before it had done its job.
No Thriller, no sales record. The album was never going to achieve the record without the Landis directed film which isn't commonly acknowledged by the fans these days.
The album can be said to be a little overrated if one thinks the music is what led to ridiculous sales statistics.
But it was the Thriller film that put the crown on his head. In an indisputable way and there it remains to this day.....

Bad is great, but there's nothing on it that holds a candle to Billie Jean. I don't know how to say this, but....Man In The Mirror?! Definitely more than holds a candle to Billie Jean as music AND performance. Timeless song and incredible performance at the '88 Grammy's!
