Episode 6 is out now.
Main topic for this week is "when a band isn't a band anymore". Being a big GNR and Floyd fan, I've had to endure this argument for other 3 decades now lol

Really enjoyed the last episode Russ.
Excited you're so enthused about the new Ozzy record. I mentioned in the Ozzy thread that I promised the missus that I would wait until my birthday to listen to it as she's got me the album as a present, and it's killing me not hearing it. I love Ozzmosis, and always respect your opinion Russ, as we seem so like minded about a lot of music stuff, so I know if you say it's good, I won't be disappointed.
I really liked the direct approach to this show, a clear subject outlined in the title and at the beginning.
Melissa is hilarious. It's great that you're not just doing a circle jerk with buddies who love all the same stuff as you. She adds a humour and the age gap is something which makes the show feel cross-generational. Not to make you feel like a dinosaur (I'm pretty sure I'm closer myself to your age than Melissa's!), but it's just good to have a perspective from different age groups.
I was surprised you didn't mention Black Sabbath once!! I still know a guy who refuses to listen to a single Sab record without Ozzy. Whilst many grew to love the Dio years, it seems that only hardcore Sabbath fans could name you a single song from the Tony Martin, Ian Gillan eras. A good spinoff topic might be, is one guy ever important enough to carry the band on his own? Some would argue that if Tony Iommi calls it Black Sabbath, then it's Black Sabbath. I don't think Axl was afforded the same courtesy with Chinese Democracy, but then you could argue he didn't earn the right to carry the name alone, like Iommi did. Food for thought.
Anyways, nothing but positive feedback from me about the changes you've made. It felt concise, and you kept things moving and I'll definitely be tuning in again.

Looking forward to next week's show now. Especially considering I honestly felt around 80 listening to The Weeknd's lyrics this week!

In my defense, I was listening to it on a night shift. I can barely recall my own name at 4am, let alone anyone elses. The missus thinks The Weeknd is my midlife crisis artist, which I'm pretty sure has to do in no small part with his lyrics. I have to admit, I do feel very trendy listening to him singing about all the bitches he's fucked. It's a far cry from Elizabeth I Love You.

The Weeknd sounded like a 17 year old showing off to a group of older boys!

I am catching up now. Just listened to the first three episodes on Spotify. Re. the lip-sync discussion in Ep 3. There has been a bit of a argument on Twitter about it a couple of weeks ago, due to some comments that Charles Thomson made. Needless to say the lip-sync debate about MJ came up due to the Super Bowl, then one thing led to another and the HIStory Tour came up. While I am no fan of the lip-syncing on HIStory Tour myself (you will see me object to the prospect of a HIStory Tour show being released as the live representation of MJ in any thread about that) but there was something about the way Charles expressed himself that rubbed a lot of us the wrong way. Mostly some claims he made that seemed to be based on anecdotal evidence rather than fact. For example, he claimed that the interest in MJ dropped by the HIStory Tour and he wasn't selling out Wembley during the HIStory Tour because people were so upset by him lip syncing on the Dangerous Tour. To me that totally seemed like Charles creating his own version of events based on his own prejudices and taste. First of all, while MJ did not strictly sell out the three Wembley shows on HIStory Tour, he did sell 98% of the tickets, so it is not like it was a flop. (212,601 / 216,000 (98%) - according to Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIStory_World_Tour ) Then his conclusion that the "drop" from Dangerous Tour was due to him lipping some songs on the Dangerous Tour was a totally arbitrary conclusion. MJ just went through horrible allegations between the two tours, they might have had something to do with his popularity dropping a little, right? There is just no evidence it had to do with lip-syncing. And it is not like the Wembley shows on HIStory Tour were flopping, either. 98% of the tickets selling out in three Wembley shows is a flop in what world? U2 sold out two Wembley shows on their PopMart show, around the same time, in 1997. A lot of bands are happy to sell out just one.
He also came with the anecdotal evidence that he knows people who walked out of HIStory Tour because MJ lipped. Could be, I don't know his friends. But most people who I heard talking about their experience of visiting a HIStory Tour show didn't seem to care. Granted the people I heard were fans, who were probably just happy to see MJ, no matter what. Maybe non-fans would have more issues with the lipping - if they noticed it at all. Again, I am not saying you can't be critical of lipping and that wasn't the thing why people didn't like Charles' comments. It were more the ex-cathedra statements and conclusions he made about how the audience supposedly felt about it. He was really just projecting his own feelings on the rest of the audience. Even though HIStory Tour is not my favorite MJ tour - and yes, that's because of the excessive lip-syncing - and I don't think myself that this is the tour the Estate should use to represent MJ as a live performer, but the fact is commercially and in terms of visitors it was MJ's most successful show. So I would object to anyone acting like it wasn't massively successful. That's just not true. It was attended by approximately 4.5 million fans (Bad Tour by 4.4 million). And the HIStory Tour had less shows (83 vs. Bad's 123). So there is just no evidence whatsoever that people at the time were too bothered by the lipping. The fact that This Is It sold out in minutes confirms that too. It wasn't like: "MJ lipped on the last tour here, so we are not interested in him."
Sorry for the rant, this discussion just came up in me hearing this episode. My stance on lip-syncing is that I prefer a live sung performance any time. I think most MJ fans do too. So it is not like we argue it is better than if MJ sings live. That's why if the Estate releases concert shows, they need to focus on ones that are live or mostly live, not on fully lipped HIStory. But there are different levels of lipping, indeed and it is different for different artists whether you give it a pass or not. I agreed with the points made about that in the podcast. If you know an artist can sing (like MJ) it is easier to give them a pass, than those who are lip-syncing because they can't hold a note. It is also easier to give it a pass to an act that dance and otherwise work their ass off on stage than to someone who just stands there and their whole thing is just singing and they aren't even doing that live (eg. Kelly Clarkson). But then again, I would also go easy on Whitney, and I am glad you mentioned her performance of the national anthem that is still considered as the standard when it comes to singing the national anthem at a sports event. Well, it was lip-synced. But somehow I still don't care and that performance still gives me the chills.
I can somehow accept the reasons given, which were technical reasons, not that Whitney can't sing. You just know she can, so you give her a pass. At least I do. Same with MJ.
