I’ve listened to both albums, Russg, and I like some of the songs on both, but not all of them. My most favorite songs are:
- “Butterflies”* (with, perhaps, *an example of THE BEST, MOST BEAUTIFUL vocals from Michael, in his later adult years, that I have ever heard from him, at this point)
- “Speechless” (the whole entire song, especially, its opening and closing A Cappella parts)
- “The Greatest Romance Ever Sold”* (*THE BEST track from Prince, on this album)
- “Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic”
- “You Rock My World”
- “Cry”* (*with great meaningful lyrics, as well as Michael’s interpretation of them)
- “Heaven Can Wait” (Great vocals!!!)
- “Unbreakable”
- “The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars”* (*not exactly sure of the correct wording of its actual title, but still a great song from Prince’s album, though)
These songs are what I like from both albums, by two great artists who BOTH should equally be remembered for their music. Therefore, I decline to vote in favor of one and against the other.
And, neither one of these albums are bad at all, because, I think that what critics consider to have been Prince’s and Michael’s so-called “worst” albums and material absolutely obliterates, annihilates, and completely destroys —— in very good ways —— a whole lot of what most of today’s newer “stars” put out, many, MANY times over. Critics have their own personal opinions, likes and dislikes (which is what “subjectivity” is, VS. “objectivity”), just the same as everyone else does. That’s a nice playlist! ‘Rave Un2 Vincy’! “Vincy” means “Victory” in Latin, apparently. Thank you, aazzaabb. I didn’t know about what the “Vincy” meant, in your shortened, combined title using the ones from Prince’s and Michael’s albums. It’s a really cute way of combining two completely separate titles to altogether different albums, “Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic” and “Invincible.”
By the way, speaking of “Victory,” couldn’t you also (coincidentally) be referring to the title of a certain “Jacksons” album featuring all six brothers —— including Michael —— that came out the same year “Purple Rain” the movie had premièred, as well as its soundtrack album having been released? (HAHAHAHA!!! ) That’s quite interesting.

aazzaabb I need some Rave support in this thread. C'mon man, you're my last hope. I think Rave is a decent album! Or at least like Invincible there’s a decent album in there somewhere. Wasn’t this Prince’s attempt at a commercial return to the mainstream between more obscure releases? Didn’t he fall out with Clive Davis over what he believed was a lack of promotion? I really like The Greatest Romance Ever Sold. I think it’s solid, but I think the brand of r&b was sort of old hat by that point. That sort of 90’s r&b was maybe winding down? I’ll have to find time to give it a listen because it’s been an age, but I remember enjoying the live DVD and afterwards reading how awful this whole era apparently was. I was surprised by the amount of hate Prince fans gave it. It must be disheartening for a Prince or an MJ when they feel their not being supported by their label and also the fans react negatively towards an album. I’ll give it a listen this week. The problem with Prince is that he released too much material. I love the 80’s catalog. It’s majestic original pop, but at a certain point -maybe around TGE or Emancipation I begin to struggle. I suppose this really merits more of my time because it’s sort of aimed at me being that it’s a commercial pop album.

Victory being a nod to the Jacksons Victory album from the Latin translation of the word Vincy, and Vincy being an approximation of Invincible. It’s just a nice little play on words that ties both albums together, and as you’ve wonderfully added; it also recalls that Victory era of which was when Prince had Purple Rain which is brilliant! So both artists are striving through their music towards a time when they were imperial and transcendent. They always were but maybe Victory and Purple Rain were more idealistic times which their striving to recall.

The year 1984 was a HUGE one, for BOTH Prince AND Michael Jackson. While Michael was still at the height of his “Thriller” success, he and his brothers released the “Victory” album, and went on what turned out to be their very last full-fledged World Tour as a group, to support it —— not coming together again until THE final time nearly some 20 years later, in 2001 (for Michael’s “30th Anniversary Celebration,” which took place months before the release of “Invincible”) —— in which all six of them, including Jermaine, would reunite.
Meanwhile, at roughly around the same time that the Jackson brothers released their “Victory” album, Prince premièred —— and, made his movie-acting début in —— the film, “Purple Rain.” The following year, in 1985, he won an “Oscar”® for the music in the film’s soundtrack.* (Ironically, it was *an award that Michael never won, himself, given how well-known and deep his interest in, and love of, the movies was.) By the turn of this current Century, it seemed that everything had come full-circle for the both of them since their heyday in the 1980’s, and there were still many coincidences, and things in common, between them. What do you think?

I don't care how unpopular it is to some, it's the album that turned me from casual listener to obsessed nut and I still love it today. I must've listened to it upwards of 300+ times, probably way more. The whole era you struggle with is actually the era that has always resonated with me most. The run of albums from Emancipation, Crystal Ball, New Power Soul, the Prince produced Chaka Khan album Come 2 My House (an incredible joint effort that I'd recommend as essential listening to any Prince fan) and finally Rave is just a wildly exciting run of albums to me. The so-called "plastic years" is actually chock full of immensely funky grooves and stunning balladary, this is the Prince I fell in love with.
