Back on MJJC, some bright spark had the idea of creating a thread for a specific song we could discuss.
Now, in Great British Bake Off style (ask your UK friends), this has moved to a different forum. Nothing has changed except there are more adverts.
Anyway, allow me to kick off with one of my favourite MJ songs that no-one else seems to love as much as me. Much like a middle child in a family, I feel no-one loves it, no-one hates it - it's just there. Well I love it enough for all of us.
Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you 2 Bad.
'2 Bad' is a breathtaking hip-hop/dance hybrid that should have been a single. The song was to re-appear on the excellent Ghosts short film later on with an equally exceptional dance routine. With a cameo rap by Shaquille O'Neal, the song is another swipe at haters and an ode to his inner strength. 'I'm right back where I wanna be β I'm standing though you're kicking me!' The production on here is perfect with beats that unconsciously make you move. An extremely contempory song, that could easily hit the top spot 22 years later if released.
It made 21 in my recent Top 100, but actually nowadays would be higher. I love this song. I think actually it's the most street song Michael ever released. The production is awesome, from the opening gangsta talk onwards. I loved the fact this was featured in Ghosts, I couldn't believe it that at the time.
Also, shout out to the Refugee Camp remix from BOTDF, as that was one of the few on there that managed not to shaft the original up the ass. A very different cool take by Wyclef with an inspired use of the Beat It riff.

I don't like the rap on 2 Bad, but otherwise the song is lit π The lyrics are great and a big middle finger to all his haters.
I love the choreography too, one of MJ's best work.

I love 2 Bad. The performance in Ghosts is amongst some of his all time greatest choreography, although I was always perplexed as to why he chose this song for the main performance piece in the shortfilm, instead of Is It Scary or the the song of the same name.

It's one of those songs that I neither love or hate; I'm in the middle with it (much like the middle sibling syndrome as TonyR said lol). I think, however, it works really well in Ghosts. Love the choreography in it too.

I was wondering if someone would start a SOTW thread on here.
Interesting first choice Tony. I like 2 Bad, although it's amongst my least favourites on HIStory (which is no bad thing, as HIStory is my favourite Michael Jackson album and I genuinely love every song on it except for Come Together).
I actually think I prefer the Refugee Camp remix to the original, which is pretty much the only time I've ever felt that way about a remix.

I don't get people's ambivalence towards this song.
As we say in Yorkshire 'N'owt so queer as folk'.
You're missing out people. Revisit it. Revisit it now.

I dig it well enough, but the rap on the original kind of turns me off, hence why I prefer the remix, which has a better rap. Shaquille O'Neal on 2 Bad is probably the worst rap cameo in an MJ song, probably even more so than that random Fats bloke who added absolutely nothing of value to Heartbreaker/Invincible.

If you look at the lyrics and even its title, it seemed as though he was trying to do a sequel to "Bad." At the time I didn't like Michael's music, cuz I felt like it wasn't as good as it used to be, but now I can appreciate it for what it is.

I don't think it was meant to be a sequel to Bad.
I'm with those who neither love it or hate it, until it comes with the choreography in Ghosts because that massively elevates the song. It's one of my favourite choreographies of all time. Amazing!

Love this tune, but it was one I had to come around to when I was younger. Once I did, I realised how absolutely great it is.
I always saw it as a sequel to Bad, with a couple of nods, using 2 instead of too, "tell me that youre doin wrong" and the evolved "throwing rocks to hide your hands" instead of throwing stones.
Great beat, interesting instrumentation and a damn fine snare drum sound. I always liked the rap, but that doesn't count because I hate rap (its better than any of the raps on Invinvcy, Unbreakable aside)
I LOVE the Refugee Camp remix on BOTDF too. That drum. The harmonies in this song are phenomenal too.
