So basically the fact that MJ treated his videos high quality products and shot them on film ended up being a disadvantage? How sadly ironic. But to be honest, I doubt these lazy excuses by the Estate. Because we have seen them make lazy excuses about other things as well (eg. "MJ wouldn't want unfinished tracks to be released" etc). It's not a disadvantage since you can still get a high resolution image from them at the end of the day (shooting at a higher resolution then finishing at a lower one is still very common, even today in the age of HD/4K). The only disadvantage in this situation is apparently where they've all been kept over the years.
Like you, I roll my eyes at some of their explanations but their explanations for the restoration process being expensive and taking some time aren't wrong. That doesn't change the fact they should invest in it though, even without an end product in mind. One can make a very good case for his music videos being the most defining aspect of his legacy! They're not struggling for money so absolutely should be doing it anyway.

Kinda concerning to me that they seem so unconcerned about not having these assets.

Kinda concerning to me that they seem so unconcerned about not having these assets. Yeah man, absolutely. Sure, the stuff sitting in a random person's vault might be fine today - but what if that placed burned down tomorrow? What if it flooded? What if they sold off their collection and along went some important piece of MJ? Someone involved with the Estate did say around Bad 25 that they are digitising everything they get their hands on, and so hopefully that's true.
On another note, I was pondering on it a bit tonight having re-read the FAQ, and they mention possessing Thriller and Smooth Criminal in 35mm prints - which does make total sense given those played in theatres at the time and would need a film print to do so. So one could assume anything that played in a theatre upon release was also finished and printed onto 35mm, since their destination wasn't just MTV and thus the extra cost was justified - that would be the videos in Moonwalker and also Ghosts, which premiered at Cannes. I can't think of much else that officially aired in theatres at the time? I'm really just theorising from bits'n'bobs of information from all over the show as that's all any of us can do.

If that stuff is lost then it's the biggest tragedy in music. The greatest pop star of all time and the master copies of his work are unaccounted for? That's awful to think about and an embarrassment to his legacy. For all these other artists to have their stuff properly preserved and not his is just unfair.

Broadway: Michael Jackson Musical Sets Cast, Reveals Characters Including Jackson 5, Berry Gordy, and Michael’s Parents The cast and characters for “MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical” were revealed this morning. We now know who the main characters are in the story. They include Michael, his parents, the Jackson 5, and Motown founder Berry Gordy. So far not included in the characters list are people like Diana Ross, or Bobby Taylor, who discovered the Jackson 5 with Gladys Knight and brought them to Gordy. They may very well not be in this story. There are no marquee names on the cast list, but these people are no doubt incredibly talented. They include: Myles Frost plays Michael. Quentin Earl Darrington as Joseph Jackson / Rob, Whitney Bashor as Rachel, Gabriel Ruiz as Alejandro, Antoine L. Smith as Berry Gordy / Nick, Joey Sorge as Dave, John Edwards as Jackie Jackson / Ensemble, Ayana George as Katherine Jackson, Apollo Levine as Quincy Jones / Tito Jackson, Tavon Olds-Sample as Michael, Lamont Walker II as Jermaine Jackson / Ensemble, Zelig Williams as Marlon Jackson / Ensemble, with Raymond Baynard, Kali May Grinder, Oyoyo Joi, Carina-Kay Louchiey, Renni Anthony Magee, Aaron James McKenzie, Aramie Payton, Kamille Upshaw, Ryan VanDenBoom, and Darius Wright rounding out the ensemble. “MJ” starts previews December 6th and opens February 1st. Again, the people putting the show together are among the best on Broadway, including producer Lia Vollack and her husband, the great Tony winning set designer Derek McLane. Lynn Nottage wrote the book, Christopher Wheeldon is the director/choreographer. Everyone involved is top notch. So if this show doesn’t work, with all of Michael’s hits and Jackson 5 singles, etc. it’s time to go home! www.showbiz411.com/2021/08/10/broadway-michael-jackson-musical-sets-cast-reveals-characters-including-jackson-5-berry-gordy-and-michaels-parents

“MJ” Director and Choreographer Christoper Wheeldon has introduced brothers Rich and Tone Talauega as part of the musical’s creative team.
The Talauega brothers, who have been working with Wheeldon on the development of “MJ” for the past three years, will focus specifically on the Michael Jackson movement for the production. They were previously dancers on Michael Jackson’s tours and performances and have choreographed multiple Jackson-related projects since, including Cirque Du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour” and “Michael Jackson One.”
“It has been very exciting to have them as a part of my team as their first-hand knowledge both of Michael’s life on tour and movement languages is invaluable and informed the authenticity of our show,” said Wheeldon in a press release.
Performances of “MJ” are scheduled to begin at the Neil Simon Theatre on Dec. 6, with an opening night set for Feb. 1.
Rich and Tone are no strangers to the Fans.
We first saw them with Michael on the HIStory World Tour but also on the short film GHOSTS.
They also play stunts in “You Rock My World” and seen on the TV documentary “Michael Jackson: The One”.
The brothers are also heavily involved with Michael Jackson’s Estate since he passed away.
First in 2011 with Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour and Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE as mentioned and now the MJ Musical.
But they were also involved in the Michael Jackson Halloween Special (2017), the Michael Jackson’s Hologram at the 2014’s Billboard Music Award and choreographed Michael Jackson & Justin Timberlake’s Love Never Felt So Good short film.
This Week-end, Rich and Tone will talk about their involvement with the MJ Musical at the Michael Jackson Birthday Celebration in Las Vegas.

The producers of the upcoming Broadway production of "MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical" recently launched a nationwide [U.S.] search for an actor to play the young Michael Jackson on the show.
According to an official announcement, producers are looking for an actor who appears to be between the age of 10 and 12 capable of singing young Michael's songs —which is not an easy task.
Candidates should make a video singing a hit song from Jackson 5, "Rockin' Robin", "ABC", "The Love You Save", "I'll Be There" and "Never Can Say Goodbye".
According to a representative of the show, the young actor will appear on iHeartRadio Broadway for an exclusive interview, in addition to portraying "the greatest artist of all time".
"MJ" is written by Lynn Nottage, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes. The soundtrack features the greatest hits of Michael Jackson, under the direction and choreography of British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, winner of the Tony Awards in 2015.
The musical will have seven weeks of previews from December 20 and officially debut on February 1, 2022.
