It's really only in the last few years I've realised that it's the 80's for me, because it's the most enjoyable (movies too, and their soundtracks).
Also, the 80's gave us the monster collaborations of Live Aid and We Are The World, neither of which have ever been replicated with the same feeling or enjoyment. Live Aid/We Are The World and Motown 25 are just the most amazing get togethers of artists we'll ever see, and never saw the likes of again. Live 8 and Live Earth were great, but nothing compared to the original. Massive tours like Queens Magic Tour in '86, the Bad Tour, Bowie's Glass Spider Tour. Music and movies were bombastic and fantastic.
The 80's also gave us the 2 greatest songs ever written, so...

You had the greatest rock album ever made Appetite For Destruction, the best of Kate Bush's catalogue, two great MJ albums and one amazing Jacksons album, Janet becoming a superstar, Chaka Khan released her best work in the 80s, The Smiths entire back catalogue as well as the beginning of Morrissey's solo career, Bowie gave us Scary Monsters and Lets Dance, you had Prince's best work both released and unreleased plus all the amazing protegees like The Time and The Family, also a lot of metal/rock was fun back then before grunge took the fun out of everything. Love the 80s albums from Sabbath, Dio, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Skid Row Alice Cooper etc. Even Tori did a fabulously camp 80s pop album before she made it big in the 90s. I mean look at this album cover and tell me it's not everything that's awesome about the 80s: The 80s were just great fun!

Also as you said, those movies and soundtracks!! Heck what about those 80’s movie posters too!! Goonies, Back To The Future etc!! It’s just one big nostalgia trip and pure fun!!

80s were stunning and surely gave birth to the greatest artists of all time, but I'd argue that those artists all released their best albums in the next decade
Madonna - Erotica, RoL MJ - Dangerous, HIStory Janet - Janet, Velvet Rope
I think most of my Top 10 albums of all time were from 90s, even if I only choose 1 per artist.
Dangerous Erotica Janet Jagged Little Pill Definitely Maybe Coming Up Different Class Good Stuff Older
80s were obviously amazing also and a lot less baggage!

The 80s were overall the best decade. Not just in music. Maybe it's childhood nostalgia and generational bias, but when I look at today's kids and all the nonsense in the world they face, I feel I was lucky to be a child in the 80s. It was so much more fun and less depression, pressure and stress than things now seem to be for kids.

I was a kid of the 90s really (born in 85), but it makes me kinda sad seeing my nieces and nephews obsessed with social media. We all look for escapism, but there was a degree of magic in the pop culture of the 80s/90s which kids today just can't relate to. I for one am glad I had Michael Jackson rather than TikTok as my childhood obsession.

The 80s were full of depression, division, racism, riots, strikes (in UK at least). The pop music revolution that happened was in some way a statement against all the depression that was left going on. Hell, even Wham's first record (Wham Rap) was about unemployment and dole queues.

Yeah, but the world has always been fucked. When you're a kid you're mostly oblivious to that stuff. I think my point remains that the importance of pop culture back then provided kids with much more magic and escapism than the kids have today.

Reminds me of when friends say the kids shows these days aren’t as good as they used to be when we were young. Yeah, cos you ain’t a kid no more!

Well, unemployment and economic hardships affected adults (and it's dependent on country and political, economical systems). I'm more talking about a child's life now vs then and less economy than a broader social aspect. I feel it was more care free back then. And while it may be part "rose colored glasses" but I think psychologists, sociologists are also talking about the fact now how social media, internet etc might not be so great for people's mental health. And many kids grow up on it. So I'm not sure it's all just unsubstantiated nostalgia. I think there is genuinely more stress and pressure on kids today.

You may have a point but the 80’s gave us so many incredible moments. What I love about it is that it was so unique and completely unlike the decades that came before or after it. It was completely its own thing and a lot of people seem to love it or loathe it. But it was so colourful and vibrant and fresh. It was less serious and more fun. For me it feels like pop culture expanded out into other area’s such as TV commercials, cartoons, fashion, boom boxes, and of course the music video became this all encompassing way of life through MTV and pop culture became this whole universe of things. MJ may have made even greater albums later on but did he give us greater moments than the 80’s? Was he ever as happy again as he was in the 80’s? Motown25, Thriller short film and album, the Grammys, Pepsi commercials, We Are The World, Bad short films and album, tour, Moonwalker etc. But then I am a child of the 80’s and it holds so much nostalgia and a ton of fun memories for me so I’m incredibly unapologetically biased which I absolutely should be because it was the best decade of all time in the history of existence!

You're right, I was just thinking about studio albums but put the whole package together and 80s is pretty unbeatable. If Madonna's Blonde Ambition Tour had been slightly earlier then it would have definitely helped!

The 90’s was the last time I felt excited for music on that level!
