So the documentary seems to be a great one with lots of high quality footage (Victory Tour!) and behind the scenes video/audio. It just sucks it had to be Nelson George who can work with all this. I don't understand the promotional concept here though. I mean are they going to release this to the public after the T40 campaign is basically over? They did this with the Bad25 documentary too. Shouldn't they have put it on Netflix or something this week to help to boost the album's sales? The fact that this doco is still being worked on suggests once more that there probably wasn't much of a strategy, and that they basically just threw some stuff together last minute. I'm excited to see all the new footage. I just hope the number of irrelevant talking heads is minimal.

By all accounts it seems that the topic doesn't drift like it did at times in Bad 25 and the OTW doc. This sounds very promising. Hopefully they can finish Billie Jean soon and update the footage in the doc, I'd imagine it looks very out of place.

Anyone else not at all interested in this doc and just wants to see the new footage/audio separate from it? The stuff the director has said over the years and the fact that the estate still hired him has destroyed any interest I would have had when I first found out who was making it.
I'm finding it really strange that everyone just seems to have forgotten about this lol.

But if something mega positive comes out of it, ie. a Netflix spot and a critical and commercial hit it won't exactly wrong a wright but it might go far in spreading positivity and undoing a bit more damage? That remains to be seen for a while yet. I'm not gonna lie, I have Victory Tour blinkers on right now so that's my absolute main focus. I wasn't expecting much in the way of new footage so I'm pretty shocked. Seeing Damien Shields say that this is probably better than Bad 25 and OTW is even more shocking.

Review from MJJC. This reminds me of reviews I saw of Moonage Daydream that were based solely on the new footage shown. Anyway, some balance nonetheless from all the positive reviews I guess.

Hmm, this sadly does sound similar to Bad 25, which contained a lot of interesting footage, but only in segments of just a few seconds, often while someone was talking over it.
I'm happy with some of the people they talked to (like Matt Forger, Greg, Steve Lukather), but utterly irrelevant people like Usher and Mary J. Blige also appear. And apparently they're bragging about MJ's TikTok popularity in the film? Who cares? Also, nice way to instantly date the film.
It's a pity that all the documentaries about MJ seem to follow the tell-rather-than-show route. There are now so many examples of great and successful documentaries that have shown that you can tell a powerful story by primarily relying on archival footage, and that audiences don't need talking heads to explain and contextualize everything for them. I wish the Estate would have hired a filmmaker who understands that. Here they have a treasure trove of footage of this most unique, successful and charismatic superstar, and they once again hire someone (who's also written the most disgusting things about MJ) who chooses to only show short snippets of it.
I know, I know, I should wait until we can actually see it.

As long as the person knows their shit, executes at a high level and doesn't bring any bullshit to the table, I'm ok with it. I'd rather a well made documentary by someone like Nelson George than another average piece if work from Spike Lee.

That fan should really keep in mind that Thriller is probably the most written and talked about album of all time, so it's vanishingly unlikely we'll learn something new! This isn't really for long time fans, but is for newer, younger fans. It'll be new information to them.

I think they did a fabulous job, and Nelson George was the right person for it, since at least he was alive and older than us to remember thriller mania
I loved the footages, the stories, the clips of Michael speaking, all the info about the records during thriller and posthumously, and they did a great job showing relevancy in this day and age tiktok. They showed the receipts well and whoever is complaining no one is doing shit can stop now
Also Sony music were at the event and I told them to pass it along that we want victory tour to be released. Also, they admitted they’re sill working on the documentary and seemed enthusiastic. They were all wearing mj shirts and handing out free thriller 40 posters
Additionally my only minor issue was the inclusion of Brooke shields who turned her back on him initially. The weekend and Quincy would have been great appearing and I hope they’re approached soon

Well, I didn't really have that "wow" effect with Bad 25...

Was supposed to see the doc but was exhausted and realized I'll see it eventually some other day. Glad to hear it's well made. Hopefully no questlove or whatever modern artists. So glad it has Girl Is Mine recording footage. I still want the full IJCSLY footage shown in Bad 25.
