HIStoric the above post isn’t aimed at you mate, just in case you think it is. I’m speaking in very broad terms also but it reads like I’m being a bit of a douche. 😂

HIStoric the above post isn’t aimed at you mate, just in case you think it is. I’m speaking in very broad terms also but it reads like I’m being a bit of a douche. 😂 Oh no it's fine! I don't think I had seen your reply yet actually haha. I have a first pressing of Thriller, Thriller25, Thriller25 CD x4, Thriller25 American longbox CD, Thriller original 82 CD, Thriller on cassette and god knows what else. Yeah, I’m the same as you mate; content every time. I’ve heard noticeable differences in the sound between vinyl and CD over the years but it’s not always the case. I’ve always thought first issues of MJ’s albums are always stunning on CD. In fact CD is my all round favourite format. I could never go down the audiophile road, spending thousands on decks, amp, speakers and the whole set-up. And then paying ridiculous money for albums on vinyls. These audiophiles are after ruining the market by willingly paying stupid money on records which is driving prices up. Nothing against record collectors but some of that audiophile none sense is so pretentious. I can’t stand the Hoffman forum at times; you’ll have pages and pages of these guys measuring the BPM’s and wave lengths, and comparing for compression etc. I mean no offence intended but get a fucking life 50 year old man.😂 Or get laid! 🤣 Yeah, get the Queen boxset mate! And yeah, I can definitely hear differences between mixes or different masters etc, absolutely, and I've invested in a very nice pair of Audio Technica headphones but I'm still nowhere near 'audiophile' and I'm honestly super happy. Anything above 320kbps sounds the same to me really, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I think compression really only starts standing out once I get below 160kbps... but yeah I'd hate to be at a friends place listening to their Spotify, and all I can think about is how this sound or that sound isn't crisp enough due to the lossy compression.

I definitely notice compression etc but yeah I generally use spotify and it's totally fine for me. Mixing and mastering bothers me greatly though, when something is mixed weird or compressed to hell I can't ignore it most of the time and it really bothers me.

I thought I might have unintentionally offended you. You’re much smarter than I’m giving you credit for I guess.😂 So I’ve read up a bit on the Queen boxset and it turns out that the 2-disc is the way most fans will go as it has The Miracle Sessions which is the main draw for fans. I’m guessing you already know that and I’m somewhat stating the obvious.😂 So that’s probably the way to go which will be a nice set alongside the Thriller40 set. I’m keenly aware you know all this and I’m sounding like a grandad that’s about 50 years behind lol. I seem to spend a large part of my life flip flopping on whether to buy or not to buy big fancy boxes of music that I probably won’t listen to a whole lot. Today I’m in the “less is more mood”. Crowded House released their albums as 2-disc deluxe editions about 5 years ago and to this day I feel they got it spot on. The original album remastered, a second disc crammed with goodies and a book, all housed in a dvd sized hard box. They’re great sets, easy to slide the book and discs out and after glossing through the book and listening to the bonus disc you’re left feeling satisfied and that you’ed have happily listened to another few extra tracks, which is a good feeling. As apposed to the 5,6,7,8….. disc exhaustive sets that can be, well, exhausting. Yes I’m pretty much the same as you regarding compression. It’s only an issue for me if it’s audibly apparent to the point where it’s disruptive. Especially if I’m out somewhere. At the same time I agree with @smoothgansta in that I do love a well mixed and mastered album. I think that’s one of the things that made MJ’s albums so good. I’ve banged on a lot in the past about being disappointed in the Invincible album on CD as I just think that in comparison to MJ’s previous albums it’s horribly mixed and mastered. Other fans have taken this to mean that I’m being audiophilish or pretentious but I’m just being completely honest. I find it’s too loud/noisy/clunky, lacks depth -especially after HIStory and how ambient and acoustically incredible that album sounds, and theres sooooo much instrumentation completely buried and lost in the mix. Like we’re only hearing a little above half the music that was recorded. It just boggles my mind. Of course that doesn’t stop me from listening to the album but yes, I’m going on a tangent now.

I’m guessing you already know that and I’m somewhat stating the obvious.😂 No actually! Aside from looking at the Queen store and listening to the new song a few times, I haven’t done any reading into the various editions. I was just planning to check out whichever version they chucked up on streaming! But it’s good the version you want also isn’t the most expensive I seem to spend a large part of my life flip flopping on whether to buy or not to buy big fancy boxes of music that I probably won’t listen to a whole lot. Today I’m in the “less is more mood”. Crowded House released their albums as 2-disc deluxe editions about 5 years ago and to this day I feel they got it spot on. Since I’ve been completely streaming the last half decade +, I’ve stopped considering it all together, especially when some of the prices are super crazy for these box sets (and I also don’t have a CD player outside of my car anymore lol). I think the reason I’d most likely get one now-a-days is to display it, as I currently display a few vinyls in my room because I both love the album and it’s artwork. Has made for good conversation at parties actually. I definitely prefer the two-disc alongside a bigger box set approach, but if done well then a two or three disc can certainly be sufficient. Yes I’m pretty much the same as you regarding compression. It’s only an issue for me if it’s audibly apparent to the point where it’s disruptive. Especially if I’m out somewhere. Although all my CD copies are the 2001 special editions (original pressing of HIStory aside - thank you parents!) and I think I’ve read you don’t like those anywhere near as much as the original pressings, but I’m perfectly happy with them. The fact they’re really all I’ve known probably helps too. I have an original pressing of Thriller on CD that I got second hand, though it was more just to say I owned an original copy lol.

I don’t actually mind the 2001 Special Editions at all. In fact I quite like them. My favourite version of Bad is the original mix of the album because as a kid the cassette tape was very important to me. I’m came to CD’s quite late in game; around 1995. Up until then it was all cassette tapes for me. Even HIStory, I originally bought on cassette because I wouldn’t have had the money to buy the CD. I really regret selling my copy of HIStory on double cassette that came with an cardboard sleeve/box. Thinking about all of this now, the very first CD I might have bought was the Scream/Childhood single. I was very happy caught up in my own world with tape cassettes. The reason I have so many different Thrillers now is because my wife is also a fan. So when we got together both our collections became one bigger collection, and I’ve been gifted a few things over the years and have bought other things secondhand. If I see an MJ album for 50pence or 1pound I usually buy it. Nice that you have an original Thriller on CD. If you come across these things for next to nothing it’s nice to get them.
