Found this article quite telling. Do Catholics just make up the rules as they go along? Of course, it would've been cruel to tell the child that his atheist father had gone to hell, but isn't that what they actually believe? Was the Pope lying to the child to spare his feelings?

My country, Hungary is heading towards the Middle Ages now, clearly. Now we have an educatuion and health minister, who thinks - the Bible's creation story is a scientific fact, - Einstein's theory of relativity is debunked, - the Big Bang theory is nothing but speculation, - meanwhile he belives the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin is a scientifically proven fact, - and that you can avoid 70-80% of terminal illnesses by following the Ten Commandments. "Great times" ahead here... I feel like the whole world went crazy with anti-science and pro-pseudo-science sentiments being on the rise, but they especially go hand-in-hand with illiberalism and alt-right sentiments. So where those political forces are on power (eg. Hungary, Turkey, Russia etc.) people with such views also get in a position of power. I think it is very possible now that Hungary will ban the teaching of evolution in schools under this new guy, just like Erdogan did in Turkey, who is clearly Orbán's role model. I am so disgusted. We had a general election three weeks ago and Viktor Orbán won again, but it wasn't a fair election. It is starting to be more and more like elections in Russia and Turkey. For one, there is no fair media coverage any more. The state media, that is funded by tax payer money, doesn't give any space to opposition opinions. They push pro-government propaganda full of lies 24/7. There are very few independent media remaining. There is only one TV channel and a couple of websites and a weekly magazine. That's it. And they don't get to most people. Only the government propaganda does. Every other media is in government hands now and it works like a big propaganda machine. They openly declared that they take The Sun and The New York Post as role models and you can see what that means: constant character assassination of opposition leaders with lies. They are basically political tabloids where they "smear" opposition leaders by calling them gay (when they are not), they simply make up lies about their private lives as if it should matter. But on their target audience it clearly works. Fidesz's (the governing party) whole election campaign was built on a scare propaganda that if they won't get reelected then the EU and George Soros will flood the country with migrants who will steal our land and rape our women. Seriously! That was their campaign! And the sad thing is it worked. A lot of people who voted for them cited "Fidesz will defend us from migrants" as a reason. Meanwhile the whole country is rotting, the health system, education, young people are fleeing from the country in masses. Yet these fools think the country's biggest problem is migration! When no sane migrant would want to come to this shithole of a country, I am sorry. A lot of people I know were very shocked by the election results, because we really hoped people cannot be this stupid that this primitive propaganda works on them. But yes, they are THAT stupid! So frustrating. But now I can see in real time how could Hitler hijack Germany in the 1930s with brainwash and lies. Orbán is doing the same. They are also attacking NGOs and trying to cut all their fundings and basically destroy them. That's because they want everyone be financially dependent on them and as long as there are NGOs that can get finances from sources independent from them there will be people who are independent from them and may criticize them. So they are harrassing NGOs now. Opposition politicians and voters are also being labelled and demonized as Soros-agents working against the nation's interests. Do you know that infamous quote by Hermann Göring? He said: Orbán is doing the exact same here now! There is clearly a divide between big cities and rural areas, though, similarly to the USA elections. In Budapest, the capital, the opposition won and also in other big cities the opposition did better than in rural areas. It was in small villages, the poorest and most backward and uneducated places where Fidesz got most of its support. Ironically the places where they never see a migrant. But it is always the abstract unknown that can be made out to be the boogey-man. It works. Sorry, this doesn't only have to do with atheism, but in a way it does, because this government is anti-modernisation, anti-science, anti-liberal democracy, anti-EU, anti-everything of value. Instead they support churches with the most backward views (even the current Pope is getting criticized here for being too liberal). They are corrupt to the core and what they build is a fascist, neofeudalist system. That in the middle of Europe, while the EU is funding them. It's a shame that the EU allowed it to get it to this point. Oh, and Orbán is a clear traitor of its Western "allies". They are clearly being destructive of the EU from the inside, serving Putin's interest (who is Orbán's another big role model). Only 30 years after Hungary got its freedom after 40 years of Soviet occupation, Orbán is now selling out the country to them again. Disgusting.

^^I get they wanted to illustrate how much of a gore fest the old testament is but puppets don't have guts. It was hilarious anyway. To change the subject a little bit… I'm not sorry this American missionary was killed by the Sentinelese tribe. He tried to have contact with the tribe 3 TIMES knowingly it's illegal to go to the Andaman islands, the tribe has chosen to avoid contact with outsiders for thousands of years and they're known for attacking trespassers; John Chau knew he could've been killed but chose to shove his imaginary friend and zealotry down people's throats anyway. The nerve of his fucking Christian family "to forgive" the tribe for killing him, he could've wiped them out simply by sneezing transmitting germs and diseases that they've never seen before. I just hope killing him was enough to save the Sentinels lives. As the Cellblock Tango song says: "He had it coming, he had it coming! He only had himself to blame!" His arrogance and idiocy got him killed but religious people's superiority complex is greater than respecting others and leave them the fuck alone. It makes me wish indigenous people had better weapons to fight the Colonizers back in the 1500s.

^ I saw that story and I agree with your sentiment. The condescending arrogance of Christians! Because of the superiority complex he had for his faith he tought he could ignore laws and rules and even endanger the tribe - because as you said, their immune system isn't prepared to protect them from diseases brought in from the outside world. And that condescending comment by his family about the "forgiving" the tribe. They don't see that it was Chau who was in the wrong, do they?
When will Christians understand that just because certain folks don't want any of their particular brand of superstition or their Western civilization, it does not mean they are not happy and fulfilled? And what makes them think Christianity is any more true than the religion of these people? I can't with this arrogance.
I just hope the pubicity this case got won't get other lunatics try the same. Just leave these people the fuck alone! I have seen some Christians reactions about this online and they just don't get it. There is the condescending attitude of thinking Chau did them a favour by taking their brand of superstition to them. And then there are even aggressive voices, who want them "punished". WTF? Yet, many of the same people will vouch for American "stand your ground" laws. Go figure! But because it's a "primitive" tribe defending itself there should be a "revenge". I sense Western-Christian superiority complex and entitlement to control others behind it. The same attitudes that drove colonialism. The example of colonalialism only underlines that this tribe is right in defending itself from the "grace" of Christianity.

Besides a condescending arrogance, superiority complex, there's an underlying racism coming from the colonization. They believe their religion is so great that they think they must ”civilize” these "primitive savages" and "save them from Hell” due to theirs pagan way of living.

My RE teacher in school didn't believe in it and he was pretty open about it lol.
Was some time ago, but I had a religion class for 1 year. Teacher said that he believed in Jesus etc. but we chose to believe whatever we thought was right, his class was more like a history class of all religions involving world politics/history and included atheism, agnosticism and non-belief (I think he considered atheism as a belief, which can be debated...).
Also, that religion teacher somewhat looked like Bad Religion singer... which had me laughing for a whole year...
(Yet, years later, at the corner of a street, a guy asked me if I wanted to enter in a "bar with girls" (I didn't) ... and I was convinced that it was him ... But also I remembered he had a twin brother...)
