I just saw this thread on Twitter and it reminded me of how genius the Bad video is.
MJ had so many legendary videos that it's difficult to pick the Top 5 but Bad is definitely a Top 5 video to me, maybe even Top 3. That's how much I love it. Whenever I watch it I always enjoy it. It's a fairly simple concept when compared to Smooth Criminal, Thriller, Scream or Remember the Time, but it's so masterfully done. The choreography is yet another iconic one. I love the West Side Story references in it and all. And the whole video is so dynamic. I think it really showcases Scoreses' genius as well and that it's not just in being able to tell great mafia stories, but also in how he handles the camera, does the editing etc.

Love this video, song, style etc. So much! Even made my own version of it at a an audio and video booth years ago!
Although I must confess, when I first saw the video in my kindergarten days, I was confused af cause people were saying it’s mj and I thought they were lying cause he looked different from the thriller video which I was scared of haha

Yes, it's one of my favorites too. The entire section from right after the organ solo until the end is especially good. That's some of his finest dancing ever without a doubt, and it's shot beautifully. What I think also helps is that after the solo, the song cuts straight to the chorus, which really keeps the momentum going nicely. I wish they'd done that on the album version too.

One of my favourites, top 5 actually. I love the grittiness, the score at the beginning and the whole reality vs. dream element. Daryll's innocence really is what makes this video. People can look at MJ's outfit and all the other dancers and say they look silly trying to be "tough", but it totally makes sense when you consider that this is Daryll's idea of being "Bad". Love the bit with Paul Calderon. "Lookin' for somebody?" I'd love the musical score for this scene by Leon Pendarvis. To me, this video really sets the tone for the Bad era. Be yourself. Be anything.

Adore the b&w start. That was so shocking to me as a kid in 1987.
Adore the back and forth refrain at the end of the song.
But I've never gelled with the choreography. It doesn't gran me anywhere near like Thriller or SC or Ghost or RTT etc.
I also think the song is butchered a little and the sound effects are crass.
Jam over Bad all day long.
But yeah the Daryl part is ace.

I also think the song is butchered a little and the sound effects are crass. No and no. The synth solo is awesome on the video version, much better than the album version. And all the sound effects and sounds of the belt buckles rattling is just epic. So fucking cool. Not exactly sure why you compared the two, but Bad >>> Jam easily.

Also, I love the song. I don't care if the lyrics are a bit silly and "not deep" or whatever. It's such a fun, catchy song.

Love it! It’s a top 3 short film for me! I credit the song for the reason I’m here. It was quite a few years before I saw the short film in it’s entirety. In 87, 88 it was pretty much just the music segment which that alone was insanely amazing. The rest of the short film was mind blowing to see for the first time. MJ looks incredible in it and the dancing is phenomenal. The dancing/short film enhance the song and vice versa. It’s such a groove.

I slept on Bad the song for years. It really is only the last 3 or 4 years I play it regularly.
The groove and baseline are up there with Billie Jean for me.

Bad was the first short film of Michael's that I recall seeing in full (in terms of traditional ones you would watch on MTV or wherever; technically Captain EO was first but that was more theme park 3D movie attraction so not sure if it counts?). I just remember being very confused as to why there was all this other crap happening instead of playing the actual song lol.
As an adult though, I love it! Great choreography and I just love how the song itself sounds here. It has the extra horns and the instrumental break sounds different from the album too, but in a good way.
