This genuinely surprises me. I always felt that Black or White was one of those songs that was mostly carried by its message, music video and the fact that it was the lead single from a massive album. Musically, it's by far the most throwaway song on Dangerous to me and not even in the same category quality-wise as YRMW. Yeh, black or white total skipper for me. And heal the world while we're at it. I was with you until you threw Heal The World under the bus!

Surprised to see a few mentions of Black or White on here. I always figured it'd be a casual fan favourite but not one the real fans would go for.

I agree it's the worst song on Dangerous. I think nostalgia plays a part with some fans judgement tbh. Dangerous was a great time to be a fan and they may have a lot of happy memories tied into BorW, with it having an epic shortfilm and being a concert staple. It's the only explanation I can muster for the praise of a song which is basically novelty cartoon rock. YRMW is absolutely a much better song.

It's got a great energy and I'm raring to go after listening to that as well. It's length is perfect and Michael sounds great. I could listen to it forever, really. Still a great pop song!

The nostalgia factor probably does play a part in why I like it so much, but I also think it's simply a very strong, catchy, and heartfelt pop song. Michael's vocals are excellent and inspired, particularly in the last minute (love those "yeah yeah yeah's" and all the adlibs), and the percussion gives this track a fun groove that elevates it above a standard pop song. In contrast YRMW is just a pretty generic r&b track imo. It's plodding, doesn't feel particularly inspired, and has a hint of inauthenticity about it that characterizes so much of the Invincible material. It's okay and I do enjoy it every now and then, but there's nothing special about it to me.

Just a great simple pop song. He didn't do many I reckon. Most were complicated songs with unbelievable structures. But BOW's beauty is in its simplicity. What a riff, what a melody.

For me, with Black or White, I love the video, but the song itself just doesn't really excite me. And it feels like something of an outlier on the album. It doesn't really seem to fit in with the rest of it. I would've preferred MJ stuck with Monkey Business in all honesty for lead single. That's a much better song to my ears.

Oh, and Black or White is a great song. The obvious first single choice from the album. I can't imagine any other song from Dangerous having such universal appeal, which is what you want with a lead single.

I like Monkey Business but can't see it do anything but bomb on the charts. I do see where you're coming from with BoW being a bit of an outlier on the album. But then again, I don't think the second half of the album is very cohesive anyway. You could basically call everything song except Dangerous an outlier, because there's no other like it on the record.
