... on Ultimate Guitar.
Nice to see Give Into Me getting some recognition, and also a little nod to Janet's Black Cat earlier in the list.
www.ultimate-guitar.com/articles/features/friday_top_20_best_guitar_solos_in_pop_songs-68711
The list: 20. Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram - Somewhere Out There
19. Savage Garden - To the Moon and Back
18. Roxette - Listen to Your Heart
17. Shania Twain - Man! I Feel Like a Woman
16. Janet Jackson - Black Cat
There are actually four or five different guitar players on different versions of this song, including Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt. But the thematic guitar solo was recorded by Dave Barry. And according to Janet herself, she is the one who wrote the main guitar riff.
15. George Michael - Faith
14. Tears for Fears - Shout
13. Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love
12. Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
11. Alannah Myles - Black Velvet
10. Duran Duran - Ordinary World
9. Michael Sembello - Maniac 8. Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
7. David Bowie - Let's Dance
6. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
5. Michael Jackson - Give in to Me
Need a good guitar solo in your pop song? Just call Slash and he will handle it.
4. Prince - Purple Rain
3. Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone 2. Santana - Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas)
1. Michael Jackson - Beat It
And the absolute winner for this week is Eddie Van Halen's solo for Michael Jackson's hit "Beat It." When the guitarist was contacted by the producer Quincy Jones to do this solo, he thought that it was a prank call. In the end, he was so thrilled that he did this solo for free. One of the best guitar works in modern music.

I agree with Beat It @ #1. That's such an iconic solo. And yes, nice to see GITM getting some love.

Guess it depends on where you draw the line between rock and pop. Out of the songs listed here, I think the Purple Rain solo is the strongest, particularly live. On the other hand, Beat It is a poppier track, so perhaps a better choice for this specific list. It's definitely a very memorable and iconic solo.

Meh about Black Cat, it sounds like an inferior version of Dirty Diana.
Beat It is more iconic since it's part of the Thriller album.

I love Purple Rain (who doesn't?), but I think GITM has the better solo. Most GNR fans rate GITM as the best thing Slash ever did outside of the band, and for good reason.

Purple Rain solo is one of the most passionate and beautiful two minutes of music ever recorded. GITM, whilst a great song, is not even close.

Naaah. Give In To Me is one of the best songs MJ ever recorded and the guitar solo is perfect. (Waits for SoCav's angry rant)

Naaah. Give In To Me is one of the best songs MJ ever recorded and the guitar solo is perfect. (Waits for SoCav 's angry rant) Actually, although I see Matty as a lost cause (given how big of a Prince fan he already is), I think your soul can still be saved. Mjjfan810 is absolutely right. I'll give you that the Give In To Me solo is good, but it packs nowhere near the emotional punch of the PR solo. With Purple Rain the entire song builds up to the climax that is the guitar solo and its subsequent release (with the "Woo Hoo Ooo Hoo" chant). A minute-and-a-half of noodling by Slash, as nice as it is, in no way compares. MJ probably agrees, cause rather than letting it stand on its own two feet, he starts ad-libbing over it after a mere 20 seconds. That's not a knock on Slash, who has created some excellent solos, but this was imo not designed to be more than 'just' a nice solo. Admittedly the studio version is not the best representation of the PR solo's greatness, but check this from 6.13: You've got one chance to redeem yourself. Do the right thing.

I've never been a big fan of Purple Rain. Even live it dragged on a bit. I'd say GITM was a much, much better record. Great to see it here. Not entirely sure how there's no Sweet Child O Mine on this list though. And 'Man! I Feel Like A Woman' ? That has a riff but no great solo.

The voters probably considered it more of a rock than a pop track - it's really arbitrary. I think that's an example of a way better Slash solo than GITM.

And again with Faith, great riff but no solo.
GITM - although from what you'd call a mainstream pop artist, is one of the best rock songs of all time in my opinion.
Could easily be on 'Use Your Illusion' or Aerosmith's 'Get A Grip'.
