Thought I'd kickstart the song of this week! So Threatened is my most favourite track off Invincible, I view it as one of Michael's most creative songs that he ever produced in the last two decades of his life. I think what really stands out for me is the manipulation of Rod Serling's voice, who had been dead for 25 years by the time the song saw the light of day. Not only does MJ and Jerkins utilise different segments of Serling's voice from The Twilight Zone to create a unique opening that instantly draws you in, but then they go a step further and makes him RAP during the bridge! The fact they spent hours going through footage and/or transcripts to not only find the right words, but also mix completely different words together to make Serling pronounce entirely new words (like 'Neverland') is SO damn cool and creative! I've always liked to call it Dead Man Rapping. Anyway what do you all think of the song?

A very underrated song. I have always loved MJ's darker songs.
I think I love this particular part at the end the most:
What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare. It isn't. It's the beginning.
*shivers*
I so wish there would have been a music video for Threatened!

I LOVE this song so much. The metaphor of what it means and the use of Rod Serling's voice. One of my favourites and definitely a Top 2 song on Invincible (Whatever Happens being the other).

I'm so glad it was going to be given a chance during This Is it - which was the first time I heard the song actually. Always wondered what song that was until I got Invincible a few months later! Someone please hurry up and leak the multitracks

It's among the better tracks on Invincible, but that does not say much in the bigger scheme of things. The use of Serling's voice is creative and well done, but in the end a gimmick like that cannot rescue it from musical mediocrity imo. The last minute in particular suffers from the typical Jerkins overproduction style. The guy just always has to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you and has no restraint at all - exhausting to listen to at times. I also think MJ explored these themes in a much nicer way on BotDF.
The TII band did make it sound very nice and it would have been a blast to have heard that interlude live.

SHAME on Sony they pulled out the Invincible promotion and didn't let Michael to do Threatened. I can barely imagine what he could have come up with knowing how great his imagination and creativity were to make a horror trilogy.
And shame on me it took me to see it included on TII to go back to truly listen to the song and realized how great it is. One of the best tracks from the album and among my favorites from his recent recordings.

Threatened reminds me of something that would've been on the first half of Dangerous. I seem to recall Rodney Jerkins saying how much he loved the Dangerous album, and I definitely hear an influence on a song like Threatened. I think it's all in the thrashing, staccato beats, it reminds me of stuff like SDMW and CLHGA, except Threatened is miles better.
I would probably rank it fifth or sixth on the album, it definitely ranks in the albums top tier of songs, but I don't think it's as strong as Speechless, Unbreakable, YRMW and Whatever Happens.

^Threatened is better than Unbreakable, YRMM and Speechless. I respectfully disagree. I love Threatened, but I much prefer all those songs I listed.

Almost every song on Invincible is better than Speechless though π They say taste in music is subjective, but there are times when opinions are just wrong. This is one of those times. ;-)

When I became a fan I didn't know anything about Threatened. I discovered it by watching This Is It, I wish there would have been more Invincible songs on the setlistΒ
