This song is so amazing. I listened to it yesterday while I was driving and it blew me away.
I think the song is kinda underrated. Many people associate it with the funny shortfilm and don't take the song very seriously. But go and listen to it! The bass is killer, the vocals are top and there are so many great little parts (love when the horns kick in and MJ's adlibs are great too!)
I think this is one of MJ's most creative songs. I always loved how we can still hear a bit of Speed Demon when Liberian Girl kicks in.
I think Matty once said that Speed Demon is a throwaway song, should we tolerate this questionable opinion? 😄 (just kidding Matty we know you are special)
What do you think about the song?

This song has the best middle eight. Love it. Was always a favourite of mine back in the day. Haven't listened to it or infact the whole Bad album for quite a while. Actually this thread has made me want to go listen to Speed Demon now, although it doesn't feel very Christmassy. Lol

I have always loved this song and I agree it is VERY underrated. I constantly see it on lists about MJ's weakest songs and I think it is unfair. The falsetto bridge is everything.

It is not throwaway, Matty is cray-cray. The entire Bad album is pop perfection. Not a single filler track in sight (even Just Good Friends is much better than it is given credit for).
To me, Speed Demon is all about that bass. It's whole other levels of funky!

Big fan of Speed Demon. As a kid I loved those "choo" sounds MJ makes in the intro. I also love those breathy beatboxing patterns that run through this song. They give the song the feeling of a train that's chugging along. We have listened to his songs so much that I sometimes think we forget how many creative vocal sounds and noises he threw into them. He was parodied for that, but they are all very interesting, primal rhythmic elements that give the songs a lot of energy and a unique character.
I think the last minute and a half of this song is fantastic in particular. I love that whole "pull over boy" breakdown, the perfect set-up for the more loose and funky ending.
This song also contains that signature MJ thing where he has very dense, atmospheric sections with lots of synths and other textures being very central, contrasted with very sparse sections focused on the groove of the song. The contrast it creates helps emphasize the funky elements of the track. In Speed Demon you have those nice synth textures and horn arrangement at 3.05. Then at 3.25, he drops both entirely, forcing you to focus on the bass and guitar again. In addition, one of the beatbox patterns re-enters to add some more life to the groove.
This really started to become very prominent on Bad and is all over the album (e.g. the difference between the sparse verses and atmospheric choruses on Smooth Criminal, the pre-choruses of Bad and APOM, etc). But he'd use the same formula for several later tracks too (e.g. Who Is It, Money, even Hollywood Tonight).

Can we just talk about how great the synth that starts at 3:05 is? So great my friend and I are desperately waiting for the multitracks to leak so we can get that sound isolated I think the last minute and a half of this song is fantastic in particular. I love that whole "pull over boy" breakdown, the perfect set-up for the more loose and funky ending. This is so cool to actually read. I feel I pick up on this stuff subconsciously (which is why Michael and his team would do it after all), but I could never explain it unless someone else does... and yet it just works. Brilliant stuff. I need to pay more attention to this stuff 😂

That's what I mean, there are so many subtle things in the song which you will only notice if you really focus on the instrumentation. The shortfilm is pretty silly, but I still love it. MJ looked great in it.And I just LOVE how MJ pronounces 'get your ticket right' it gives me life 😁

I may have had a few, but I fucking love Speed Demon.
It sums up what it so great about the Bad album.
You have proper classic songs: MITM, SC, DD, TWYMMF, Bad.
Then you have tracks that just shouldn't be that good such as this, APOM, and Liberian Girl.
The vocals, middle 8, and instrumental on this track are awesome It builds and builds until the get your ticket, eat your ticket crescendo and then those famous MJ ad libs.
Just ugh...it sums up everything I love about Michael Jackson. This is genius, the simple elevated to the wonderful.

I’m afraid to comment on my own board. 😗
Suffice to say, it didn’t make my top 100 MJ songs. I think that’s all I will say on the matter.
