Wow, really? I always considered Cream to be one of his more throwaway singles.

My answers are very MJ heavy, but to be fair to Prince, his singles were never his best tracks.

Wow, really? I always considered Cream to be one of his more throwaway singles. Yeah. I like ITC too, but Cream is more catchy, so I went with it now. BTW, I also love Controversy, one of my favourite Prince songs, but then you put it against WBSS which is one of my favourite MJ songs. BTW Spotify just created a list of my most listened to songs in 2017 and WBSS was #1, Controversy #8.

There is a Prince bias here, but Michael's singles were awe inspring and it is even shocking me how many times I give Michael the gong. Don't Stop Til You Get Enough vs I Wanna Be Your Lover - I love both a lot but Michael just wins out here. Wanna Be Startin Something vs Controversy - Again WBSS is epic, but Controversy is the prototype Prince MPLS funk cut Billie Jean vs When Doves Cry - This is too mean and too hard, I just can not pick a winner, two of the very best songs of all time and both were absolutely crucial to their successess. Both were titanic sized hits and probably their biggest ever hits. If I really really have to choose I am actually going to go with Billie Jean, it just has more dance and hit punch Beat It vs Lets Go Crazy - easier, Beat it is an epic song, LGC is great and to me is a bit too long although the extended rocks, Beat it is one of my favourite songs of all time and too important to ignore. Bad vs Sign O The Times - I am a Prince man at the end of the day, Bad is a great pop song and has a great video, but Sign o the times is some next level shit and so much deeper. The Way You Make Me Feel vs U Got The Look - Let me see a barely there Prince pop cut versus the greatest Michael Jackson song of all time. I am lying U got the look is awesome and both songs are Grade A frothy 80s pop music that I love. Man In The Mirror vs The Cross - another hard one, but Man in the Mirror is just epic and I am awarding the points mainly over Michael's singing and the gravitas he puts into his performance. Dirty Diana vs Darling Nikki - Again just classic cuts both, but Michael keeps it cleaner and adds some blistering Prince like guitar. Despite MJ winning again, it is a Prince like sounding cut. Black or White vs Race - I don't like race at all, B or W is an average MJ cut, but its better than Race In The Closet vs Cream - Both are great, but cream is perfect pop and its the cut that got me into Prince, so ease off with your condemnation of it guys Earth Song vs Planet Earth - Again guys stop choosing the shittiest Prince cuts up against the finest MJ ones. Earth Song is earth shattering, Planet Earth is something that needs to be shot to the moon. Blood On The Dancefloor vs Gett Off - 23 positions in a 1 night stand more appealing than bodily fluids on a dance floor. seriously the MJ song is a killer, but Gett Off is next level. You Are Not Alone vs The Most Beautiful Girl In The World - Again hard to choose, both are A+++ grade songs and the finest they have to offer, I love them both to DEATH, but I choose Billie Jean over Doves, so I have to kriss kross this time. Princey wins. Whatever Happens vs The Greatest Romance Ever Sold - Despite the fact I think WH is a bit overrated it blows the Prince cut out of the water and MJ got Santana, Prince didn't. Butterflies vs Call My Name - Not even close, call my name is average Prince, Butterflies is a vocal masterpiece, Michael is soaring all over that song with that voice and it is a flawless R&B cut. You Rock My World vs Musicology - I don't even like Musicology, but YRMW is great and super catchy. . Well Mr big time Prince fan here seems to favour MJ a lot more on this list (11 MJ, 5 Prince). But I think if you compared Prince's album tracks with Michael's particularly after 1991, Prince would win out and Michaels vault is nowhere on the level of Prince's. Still a lot of fun Matty J

Have you heard the album version of controversy with the Lords Prayer and "Some people call me rude, I wish we all were nude, I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were no rules" and the chicken scratch funk guitar through. To me it is an epic and we know Prince loved that cut too, a sit was played at nearly every show he did, usually as an opener.
I really like WBSS too - a lot and the Soul Makossa bit at the end (Mama say, Mama sao Mamma Makossssa) is perfection and MJ is keeping it real with the African stuff, but he did borrowit off Manu Dibango's 1972 album Soul Makossa which started the whole disco craze. And then of course Michaels singing and his rap, and the fact it was kind of his first "Leave me the fuck alone" song - against any other song it would win, but not Controversy, because Controversy is the essential Prince funk song and the first example of fully blown and erupted Minneapolis sound funk.

^No doubt, a fantastic track. Next time I listen to it I might feel like picking it over WBSS again, that's how good both are.
Wouldn't you say Uptown or Head are earlier instances of the Minneapolis sound? Though I can see why you'd see them more as proto-MPL sound.

Yes they are still seeds of Minneapolis funk, funky seeds but Controversy is the full grown plant.
BTW - I love Dirty Mind, that whole album and sound, it was his first classic album, I actually like it more than Controversy a sthe first 3 tracks - Controversy/Sexuality and Do Me Baby are pure gold, but the rest is not so great except maybe Lets Work. Dirty Mind is great all the way through. And to complete that era, add The Time (Released Jul 1981 the same era as Dirty Mind/Controversy) as Prince wrote and recorded it all with Morris singing over top. All the upbeat cuts have a DM/Cont feel and are gold - Get It up has Prince all over it and some amazing guitar and Prince singing "Get it up, get it up, I'll fuck u all night" it is just hilarious and great.

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough vs I Wanna Be Your Lover Same year, but not really a fair comparison. MJs solo breakthrough vs Prince's first minor hit. Still, DSTYGE is one of MJs best so it's an easy win.
Wanna Be Startin Something vs Controversy
Both amazing songs, but Controversy would make my top 20 Prince songs, WBSS wouldn't make my top 20 MJ songs.
Billie Jean vs When Doves Cry I almost went with Doves, that's how close this one was. Both genius pop songs, but I think BJ has held up better with age.
Beat It vs Lets Go Crazy LGC has never been a favourite of mine, so it's an easy win for MJ.
Bad vs Sign O The Times I love Bad, but SOTT is more bold and experimental.
The Way You Make Me Feel vs U Got The Look One of MJs best singles versus one of Prince's most overrated imo.
Man In The Mirror vs The Cross The Cross is my all time favorite Prince song, but MITM is also magnificent, this really wasn't an easy decision.
Dirty Diana vs Darling Nikki Dirty Diana is a lot better imo.
Black or White vs Race BorW is MJs most overrated big hit. Race is a cool album cut.
In The Closet vs Cream Not fussed on Cream. In The Closet is good, but a bit repetitive. ITC is definitely the catchier and cooler of the two songs.
Earth Song vs Planet Earth I see why you pitted these two against eachother. Same subject matter and similar epic feel to both, but MJs is a lot more powerful.
Blood On The Dancefloor vs Gett Off
This wasn't an easy choice as I rate both as two of their best singles of the 90s, but I think Gett Off has the edge. Just.
You Are Not Alone vs The Most Beautiful Girl In The World I always found TMBGITW a bit too sugary and it's never been a favourite of mine. YANA is one of the best ballads MJ ever did.
Whatever Happens vs The Greatest Romance Ever Sold Whatever Happens is catchier and more epic.
Butterflies vs Call My Name Call My Name is beautiful, one of his finest latter day slow jams.
You Rock My World vs Musicology I dig both, but YRMW has more to it and was MJs last great single

I'm only very recent to the Prince party properly, so I'm mostly MJ here.
I have to say you picked some absolute bastards to choose from Matty! I had palpitations for most of them!

if we talking the best singles and those hit songs than MJ wins in a blow away.
Don't stop til you get enough which was Marvin gaye got to give it up inspired versus I wanna be your lover which was the emotions best of my love inspired. MJ wins this easily because the harmony and the groove and it was more fleshed up and MJ was more polished. Prince had a fun cool cut, however don't stop til you get enough is next level IMO 1)
Wanna be Startin Somethin love the tribute to africa and what other Black Artist was doing african chants and gossip wording just an incredible track. Controversy was the blueprint to where Prince found his groove and his first strong introduction to the funk. i give this track to Prince however its close 2)
Billie Jean vs When Doves cry arguably there best two and most known songs and for me i gotta give Billie jean the edge. loved doves for the beat, the vocals and lyrics, however Billie Jean had more going for it.vocals, words, music and a life all its on.3)
Beat it versus Lets go Crazy, Beat it in a blow out. the only version i like of Lets go crazy was the long version however it felt like prince was pandering to white folks. beat it still had that cold drum machine and it was a funky bottom. 4)
Bad versus Sign o the times. Bad was a cool song better live, however it didn't have enough horn and brass section and it missed the mark. it needed a better groove. Sign o the times dug the lyrics and while it lags a bit, Prince on the chorus won it over for me. to me both acts missed the mark of making each of these tracks more remarkable however Prince got this one to me. 5)
the way you make me feel versus U got the Look. the way you make me feel is the baddest song that Frank Sinatra never did post 60's. U got the look was prince channeling Robert palmer's addicted to love and it was the most obvious attempt at trying to be 80's and it was Corny. edge in a blow out MJ. 6)
Man in the mirror vs the Cross Man in the Mirror is a game changer. the cross i liked better live, however again MJ on the grammys live in 88 man in the mirror threw down hard. edge MJ and just the sentiments and feeling 7)
dirty diana versus Darling Nkki Dirty Diana is a underrated MJ song and he was singing and bringing it.dug the arena Rock aspect of the cut, darling nikki was strong in the movie and i liked the echo opening and vibe of the cut and the tongue in cheek lyrics, however dirty diana is better to me MJ got it 8)
Black or white versus Race, Blow out win for MJ. MJ had a better lyrical content and Production. 9)
In the closet versus Cream the classic New jack Swing vibe easily wins. Cream is a Poor Man's bang a gong.it was corny to me. In the closet was the best title and song groove that Prince never did in the New jack swing era if you ask me. MJ.10)
Earth Song versus Planet earth, MJ in a double blow out. earth song had that cold horn arrangement in the air and the vocals lyrics not even close. MJ 11)
Blood on the dance floor verus get off not even close Prince with Gett off. Blood on the dance floor was dated and a throwaway New Jack Swing track and it was better as a B Side or unreleased track. Prince 12)
you are not alone versus the most beautiful girl in the world, easily you are not alone. MJ and R.Kelly had the right balance in tone and lyrics here. the most beautiful girl in the world remix was cool, however prince trying to channel babyface felt flat and contrived. dug parts of the vocals however this was a desperate attempt by prince. Mj 13)
whatever happens vs the greatest romance i give this one to MJ for the build up and the guitar parts in the song MJ 14)
Butterflies vs Call my Name MJ in a Blow out better vocals and i dug the music better. all of Prince's slow cuts tend to sound the same after a while. not a bad cut, however Butterflies was MJ doing Neo SOul and taken names 15)
you rock my world vs Musiciology two dud tracks on a whole though you rock my world got that litle stepping shuffle going for it, however MJ by default because Musicology sounds old and undeveloped and like a throwaway. MJ 16)
MJ 13 to Prince's 3
