I totally agree, I love Madonna and she has had some amazing albums and songs, but like Prince, there is a lot of filler on her albums after Erotica (And even Madonna and Like a Virgin have filler) and she lacks the tight quality control of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was all about the quality versus quantity, he would only issue music if he knew it was great and even said "Every song has to be a masterpiece" about his albums. The fact Xscape and Bad25 both had out takes that sound better than most of the lesser album tracks on Madonna's and Prince's albums. Some like Blue Gangsta deserved an album of their own!
Her post 2000 output has been uninspired, more filler than hits on her albums, and lets face it American Life and MDNA are virtually unlistenable (Hopefully this new peace and love board will not get me the attacks from the rabid Madge fans on prince.org and MJJC).
Until 2012, I only had a few albums, but bought a 10 album set for $39.95 which had all her studio albums (No greatest hits, Immaculate Collections, I'm Breathless etc)and at least I have her output to 2008's Hard Candy. I also bought Rebel Heart but only really like Ghost town and Icon and find Bitch I'm Madonna at least funny.
As for her legacy (Sorry I will now answer the question - Shmone!) I only really think her 80s and 90s classics like Like a Virgin, Material Girl, Vogue, Like a Prayer, Bad Girl (Incredible song) and Borderline, all the big hits will be remembered, even better latter stuff like Jump (A great track off Confessions), What it's like for a girl, and Drowned world Substitute for love, will be less memorable and tacky cash ins like Bitch I'm Madonna and 4 Minutes will be swept up in the miniutiae of the noughties and teenies.

Not just saying this as a huge Madonna fan, but I think she'll be massively rediscovered but future generations. Much like MJ had an affect on every male artist, same for Madonna on women.
Yes, none of her albums rival Bad or Dangerous, but because she has been more prolific than MJ then her number of classic songs and videos are the same if not more. Plus like we feel Michael's best work is 90s not the well known 80s, same for M and 2000s also.
For example the much maligned American Life is my favourite album of hers and Rebel Heart although it had its share of filler had some amazing tracks on it.
Like MJ and unlike Prince, the casual music fan could name 20 plus hits easily I think.

Dave the Postman - named 23 Doris the woman in the shop - named 21 Dodgy guy at the bus stop - 25 (he disturbingly called 'Like A Virgin', 'I Like Virgins', but i gave it to him anyway & made a mental note to avoid him in the future) Deaf guy in the post office - named a hand ball in the World Cup in 1986
But seriously I reckon all these off the top of my head people know, so maybe 15-20 then?
Holiday Borderline Like A Virgin Into The Groove Material Girl Crazy For You True Blue Papa Don't Preach Like A Prayer Express Yourself Vogue Justify My Love Frozen Ray of Light Music Hung Up

Guess it depends who you ask. I can't imagine a huge amount of younger people in their 20s guessing numbers that high easily. I recognize most of those songs listed though but realistically would probably only guess... ~10? Off the top of my head without prompting.

TonyR - I totally agree with you on Madonna. I too love American Life and Rebel Heart.
It's an odd thing... With Michael Jackson, the "classic" and most popular album of his is considered to be Thriller . Yes, that album is a classic for a reason and contains fantastic tracks - but it's History for me that contains some of his strongest, most personal and riveting music. I see the same with Madonna - yes, Like a Virgin and Vogue might be her classics, but they are not necessarily her best work. Most fans who get into her work and listen to more than just her greatest hits realise her work has deeper potential than the popular singles. Anyway, I am getting off track here. I love American Life and Rebel Heart too, and I'd put those albums above her classic, earlier releases any day. I'm with you on that.
In terms of her future place in music, she has secured it. I truly believe it. No, she's not "up there" with Michael, but only because he is simply in a league of his own and no one else can compete with him. But she is still a MASSSIVE name, a legendary act, someone who is known the world over. A HUGE influence on other female acts. Someone who has been in the music business and an icon of that music business since the 1980s. She's nearly in her sixties and she's still going. She will be featured and remembered within music history, I do feel confident of this.
