Too many threads about Prince and Justin Timberlake on this board, lets discuss my all time favourite genre: ROCK/HEAVY METAL.
Who are you favourite bands from this genre and what are your favourite eras?
I love a lot of the old classic rock bands, I guess some people would call it dad-rock, but people like AC/DC, ZZ-Top, Dio, Slayer, Guns N Roses. I also really love some of the alt 90s bands like Opeth and HIM.
But my all time favourite rock band has to be the legendary Led Zeppelin. I love all the swampy, blues-rock stuff like Black Dog and When The Levee Breaks, and their more serene, delicate moments like No Quarter and Going To California (I'm a big fan of the Four Symbols album).

I love rock music too. My favorite band is Deep Purple and all the associated bands like Rainbow, Whitesnake, Blackmore's Knight, Dio etc. I think Deep Purple is criminally underrated. They pioneered the genre just as much as Led Zep and Sabbath but never had the commercial heights those bands reached. I do love Led Zeppelin a lot too. Never got into Sabbath though.
Besides those, I love a lot of 80s hair bands few of which you've mentioned. They get a bad rep for some reason, but nothing is better than playing some good pop metal when you're driving.
I also love me some Marilyn Manson. His music brings out my inner angry goth boy. Have a lot of memories attached to his music from my high school years.

The sort of rock music I like isnโt the 70s style classic stuff you mention.
Itโs more 90s/2000 stuff
Muse RHCP Fratellis Suede Guns n Roses

Great thread. I love rock music. I'm a HUGE fan of Guns N Roses - seen them live multiple times, own every record they ever made and post regularly on their message boards (yes, I cheat on the MJJForums from time to time ). Also really love Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne solo, RHCP, Bumblefoot, all of Scott Weilands bands (Stone Temple Pilots, Art of Anarchy, Velvet Revolver), Slash's solo stuff, Skid Row, Sebastian Bach's solo stuff, Judas Priest, Foo Fighters, Nirvana....

I'm not a fan of really heavy, growly rock/metal, but I do like some of the older stuff, like T Rex and Alice Cooper.

How has nobody mentioned The Rolling Stones in this thread? The greatest, most diverse rock band of all time. Gimme Shelter, Miss You, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Angie, Out Of Time, Honky Tonk Woman... so many classic, great songs.
Also, Funkadelic are trail-blazers. Maggot Brain and Cosmic Slop are two of my favourite hard rock albums.

Id be a big Metallica fan. They were my favourite band for years, went off them but listening to them a lot the past few years.
Also a huge Marilyn Manson fan. Finally saw him last December after falling in love with Holywood in 2000
Nine Inch Nails are after becomming one of my favourite bands ever in the last year or so. Absolutely obsessed with their music and their stories. Seeing them twice next month ๐

Id be a big Metallica fan. They were my favourite band for years, went off them but listening to them a lot the past few years. I never understood the appeal of Metallica. Two minute long intros repeating the same boring thrash rhythm, songs bloated with tuneless guitar wankfests devoid of any melody. They're really not for me.

I can see why someone might think that about Metallica, especially if they aren't overly-familiar with the full breadth of their career. I'm not a massive fan by any means, but you can't deny the greatness of a record like Master of Puppets, which couldn't be any further from a "tuneless guitar wankfest devoid of melody" if it tried.

One song I listen to a lot is Dream On (live performances versions).
I didn't really like Ronnie James Dio's version of this song, so I didn't really search for more music of his. But yesterday, I heard this:
Which took me, via the recommendations, to:

Dream on is a great song
Not really into rock but I guess I enjoyed evanescence, green day and within temptation almost 20 years ago. Liked some 90s alternative too
