It used to be one of my favourite MJ songs. I guess I played it until I wasn't into it a anymore. I also think the production choices on it were a bit crap.

Genuinely surprised by some of these responses. Scream is a classic in my book. One of the best fuck you songs ever. And the best comeback single ever.Sure there’s better on the album, but I’ve never tired of it. It’s impactful, it’s meaningful, it’s lyrical and it’s danceable. I.e. it’s classic Michael Jackson. First line back to the public after all the shit. ‘I’m tired of injustice’ . Brilliant. Phenomenal way to come back after the allegations. I remember seeing that there was a new album coming out on TV and soon after buying the Scream single on CD. Hearing it gave me chills. The directness of it...it had such intention and purpose. This was the last time -the HIStory era- in which I still believed that he was a force unlike anything else. Like he had an inner strength and could somehow transcend anything life threw at him. This single and album gave me a similar feeling of awe that Bad and Dangerous did. When MJ released a song it was somehow bigger than anything. Not necessarily commercially bigger -it always was anyway- but bigger in the cosmos and authoritative. The song is a masterpiece. Yeah, probably played to death like other MJ singles and also the fact that I've watched every single HIStory tour concert available means at times it can wear a little thin from overkill but when I break from it for a while and eventually come back to it, it hits me all over again. <iframe width="11.439999999999998" height="6.560000000000002" style="position: absolute; width: 11.439999999999998px; height: 6.560000000000002px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_81941366" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="11.439999999999998" height="6.560000000000002" style="position: absolute; width: 11.44px; height: 6.56px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 272px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_37610797" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="11.439999999999998" height="6.560000000000002" style="position: absolute; width: 11.44px; height: 6.56px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 371px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_89623420" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="11.439999999999998" height="6.560000000000002" style="position: absolute; width: 11.44px; height: 6.56px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 272px; top: 371px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_65934660" scrolling="no"></iframe>

the attitude of the song was cool though it was the Old Jam and Lewis sound which i dug back in the day.
the lyrics moved me more than the music of the song

Scream isn't the best song on HIStory, but it was the perfect single and video combo to return with after 93 and has aged very well.

^ Yeah Mark Romanek is an aesthetic genius. I've said before, you can take stills from most of his music videos and it looks like a piece of art.

Think I’ve got Scream on seven CD singles! Always found it weird how similar TLCs No Scrubs was to Scream so soon after. Even T-Boz’s dancing is identical. I am pretty sure it was inspired by Scream. I think there is also a Chris Brown video that was inspired by it.

Visually it's one of his most stand out short films IMO. I can't wait to see it in high definition some day.

I remember when it came out an MTV VJ said "Ok, but where is the music". I guess meaning that it's not a melodic song. LOL. But I think it fits exactly to MJ's situation at the time and it was the perfect comeback from that. It perfectly illustrated the state of mind when you want to scream. Some nice melodic song wouldn't convey that.

Madonna's Rain & Bedtime Stories RHCP - Can't Stop Macy Gray - I Try Johnny Cash - Hurt LEnny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way Whilst I totally agree that all of Mark Romanek's videos are visually stunning, I think Michael himself deserves some credit for how great the Scream video turned out. No shade against Janet, but all of the best moments in that video are of MJ. There are so many cool moments - just look at some of those gifs - and that's just the tip of the iceberg. What about that epic moment where he spins around really fast about eight times or all the exaggerated facial expressions or the incredible middle dance sequence? His charisma was off the charts in the Scream video. Could you not say the same about a song like Jam? I see these tracks more as "mood songs" and it's no coincidence that they're both the opening tracks on their respective albums; creating an atmosphere, making a statement, opening with a bang and setting the tone for what's to come.

I think as a song Scream stand up in its own right, yes it's a statement and yes, the short film is amazing also.
But I don't agree that it's not melodic or a great song by itself. I reckon if they ever did a stripped back version without all the mechanical, futuristic production, you could actually hear a tuneful melody.
Just hum the chorus slowly, it's a really nice tune!
By the way, feeling a but stupid that I never saw the visual comparisons with Edward Munch's The Scream before. What a douche!

Scream isn't my favourite song from HIStory to be honest. It's a bit like Black or White in the sense that it's a 6/10 song lifted up by a 10/10 video. I do like it, but it's definitely my least favourite of the HIStory singles. By the way, feeling a but stupid that I never for the visual comparisons with Edward Munch's The Scream before. What a douche! You're not the only one. I never made that connection until this thread if that makes you feel any better Tony!

I used to love it to bits, but now think it is just okay, I mean it pales next to songs 2, 3, and 5 on that album particularly the song that follows it. As much as I love the f word and think he was so revolutionary for saying it and also knowing it came from a severe place - it cheapened him to resort to that language. Mainly as 1994/95 was the years everyone was swearing in music, Rage against the Machine/Alanis Morissette/Red Hot Chilis/Prince/The Steppers etc - saying fuck was just a trend following rather than setting. Michael Jackson would be the last person to say fuck in a song. Still its the most memorable part.
" Just stop pressurin me, just stop FUCKing with me" - Yet he meant it!
As for the video, I also draw parallels with the superlative "Human Nature" by Madonna.
