Happy to see this thread. I love Invincible and think it is very underrated. And I agree it doesn't get enough attention.
Too bad Sony botched the promotion.

I think the whole Invincible/Sony debacle was a complex one. Mistakes were made on both parts and there was a lot of in-house politics going on at the time; MJ informing them that it was to be his last album with them and Sony not wanting to meet budget demands for the Unbreakable short film etc. Obviously there's much more to it but everything went south on that project from the beginning.
Taken at face value -and in retrospect- it's a good album. I would love a remaster with a disc of all the other tracks from the sessions and a DVD of the Rodney Jerkins studio footage.

I have no opinion on this whatsoever.... Word on the grapevine is that you have a superb collection of pieces on each of MJ's albums, aswell as a piece on the short films and you'll be sharing them here in the coming days! That's just what I heard anyway.

I never even knew MJ had an album called Invincible. When did that come out?

I never even knew MJ had an album called Invincible. When did that come out? It didn't sell as much as Thriller so I'm not surprised you've not heard it! Usually, what makes an album great, is down to how many copies it sold! Seriously tho! The MOV version -did I ever tell you about the Music On Vinyl version? I don't think I did as I rearly mention it- but it's awesome!! I see what you did there!

Is there???

We're talking about a copy and paste job! But yeah, perhaps you're right. You do occasionally quote parts of them in threads from time to time which is a good way to do it.

The overall musical standard on Invincible was arguably his best. However, as good as the album is, I personally was disappointed at how formulaic MJ's approach to the album was. In order to answer his critics, it seems, he lowered many of his vocals & made all of his words crystal clear. To many, this is a good thing, but for me, I was always much more inspired by the MJ of Dangerous, HIStory & BOTD who preferred to defy his critics & push himself creatively. That's the impulse that gave us the masterpieces of Who is It, Will You be There, Dangerous, Earth Song, Scream, BOTD & Is it Scary. Michael Jackson was a creative genius but on Invincible, for the most part, despite the incredibly high standard of the music, vocals & production, what we ultimately had was a collection of hoped-for-hits, aimed at specific markets, rather than a stand alone work of art, as was the case with the other mentioned albums.
I.M.O. LOL

^^You should definitely post them! Perhaps you'll do revised updated versions for here? Or one a week, or day? Spark some good discussion.

Decent. I'd give it a 6. I like some songs, but I feel it pales in comparison to other MJ albums.

I genuinely cherish Invincible, I think in part because I view it as MJs parting gift to the fans. It was the last release that he oversaw and put his final stamp of approval over, and that will always mean more to me than new material culled from the vault and tacked onto random boxsets, re-releases and posthumous albums.
I also genuinely appreciate how different it is from Dangerous and HIStory. It really stands on its own in his catalogue and I respect that about it. It also happens to contain two of my all time favourite MJ songs, Unbreakable and Speechless.
Does it reach the heights of the best of Dangerous or HIStory? Honestly, probably not. But I find myself listening to it a lot more than those albums as I find it to be a more listenable experience.
I've always been big on albums. Very seldom do I play single tracks here and there, one song from this artist and then another song by someone else. I really appreciate the art of making albums and listening to how an artist envisions and intends the songs to be experienced. With Dangerous and especially HIStory (which is my all time favourite MJ album btw), I have to be in a certain frame of mind to want to play those albums. With Invincible, I can pretty much put it on at anytime and play it beginning to end, only really skipping Privacy and perhaps Cry. The rest of the tracks are all fantastic and make for a really pleasurable listening experience when taken in as a whole.

I really love it too. There is so many great songs here and easily his voice is like silk here. Break of Dawn and Speechless are masterclasses in vocal ability and you feel the sincerity. Butterflies and Cry are great too, and You Rock my world is just so catchy, every time it comes on I break into song. Still I will say it is not as good as the first 5 albums, but it is definitely up there. I think some people slam it as Michael set the bar so high with OTW/Thriller/Bad/Dangerous and almost nothing would top it, but Invincible has its delights and I even like some of the other songs, many people don't (I really love 2000 watts and Heartbreaker). There is so much here to discover. To me it is easily an 8/10 album and no songs are truly bad and only a few are mediocre. Meanwhile the best cuts (Break of Dawn - my favourite song, Speechless, Butterflies, Cry, Unbreakable and YRMW are easily amongst the best he has ever made and would fit easily on Bad or Dangerous for quality). And it is not surprising that like many people who are more than familiar with the music of a certain artist known for his predilection for Purple, that songs like Break of Dawn and Speechless rate high on my radar
