I'd also add 2Bad to these songs where I always much preferred the video version the album version.
BTW, I was at Brad Sundberg's seminar over the weekend and yesterday we were all allowed to go to the mixing table and play around a bit with multitracks. There are so many hidden layers in MJ's songs it's unbelievable. Sometimes you really have to strip down a song to even notice it's there. And yes, Michael's isolated vocals or with just few instruments are always absolutely gorgeous.

From what I remember, the short film Ghosts originally only contained 2Bad and Is It Scary and Ghosts had to be edit in, of which was one of the most challenging tasks of Brad Buxer’s time with him? But yes, that version of 2Bad is incredible. You went again to Brad Sundberg’s seminar! Jealous and not talking to you! Seriously though, congrats and it must have been a lot of fun to play around with the mixing desk.🤩

Susan fast includes a wonderful quote from Jill Dolan in relation to describing how we can feel a utopian experience when we watch performance as/for escapism.
“Small but profound moments in which performance calls the attention of the audience in a way that lifts everyone slightly above the present, into a hopeful feeling of what the world might be like if every moment of our lives were as emotionally voluminous, generous, aesthetically striking, and intersubjectively intense……. Utopian performatives, in their doings, make palpable an affective vision of how the world might be better”
Isn’t that a great description of what Michael Jackson gives us as a live performer? Doesn’t he achieve this masterfully on his Dangerous Tour with the Brace Yourself teaser, the toaster jump, and standing in Roman Emperor pose? In that moment we experience an endless world of possibilities and everything is possible in the world.

There were about 8-10 songs to choose from: Bad Blood on the Dance Floor 2Bad Jam Heal the World YANA The Lady in My Life (but this one didn't have MJ's vocals, so only one person chose it) I Just Can't Stop Loving You Beat It (a live version) I think that was it. Oh he had Ghosts as well, he didn't recommend it because it was difficult.

And the second point; that the short film version of the song(s) is a better version. On the album the songs are presented in a Pop structure; verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus etc, whilst in the short films they’re presented in more of a Soul fashion and he presents himself as a Soul performer. It's good to know I'm not alone on this lol. The first time I heard RTT was in the short film, and when I finally listened to the album version, I was kinda disappointed. It's still in my top 5 Michael songs, but it's disappointing how the album version is missing that breakdown bit that the short film had.

A lot of artists including Janet included remixes of the song as a dance break in their videos, so maybe mj was the first to do it if not one of the first I remember noticing that too when first hearing it in full when I got HIStory. I knew about the video from a few seconds of it when it came out, but didn’t see the whole thing till 96-ish and was in love

Is it me or the "Michael" album is horribly mixed? I was listening to Much too Soon (IMO a gorgeous song, one of the best posthumously released songs) and (I Like) The Way You Love me (I like it too) and there's just something about the quality. It's so muffled compared to MJ's other songs from other albums and (I Like) The Way You Love sounds much better when I play it from The Ultimate Collection. I am not an expert as to what is the problem but it seems to be something with the mixing on "Michael".
