I have noticed this with some MJ fans - they usually seem to either REALLY rate Janet highly or not like her at all. I don't like her, (as in, her music career). I always felt she was a watered down version of Michael. I'm not saying it to be mean but really, everything she did MJ did better - and I'm not even comparing them just because they are siblings, it's just Janet was so obviously hugely influenced in her music, dance and style that it's almost embarrassing... I mean, if I was related to the most famous, talented singer in the world, I'd want to carve out a career that was ALL my own and stamp my own style onto it, but I just feel like Janet quickly became a watered down, budget style version of MJ. I've liked a handful of her songs but most aren't that great. Who is a fan here, or who isn't? Anyone agree with me?

Of course she was influenced by MJ (there are few who weren't) but MJ also got some great ideas from his little sister. She has her own unique style and sometimes I prefer her choreography as well (but MJ is obviously the better dancer, Janet is very technical). I think she has some very great albums (Control,Rhythm Nation, Janet., Velvet Rope) and especially in the nineties she really had her own career and wasn't dependant on her brother.

Boooo!!! I love Janet. Okay, some of her more recent stuff hasn't exactly been amazing, but taking into account her entire body of work, and the influence she's had on younger popstars today, she is more than deserving of any praise she gets.
What gets me about people who say that Janet is only successful because of Michael is, why didn't that work for the rest of the family? Where was Jermaine's Grammy? Where was Tito's sold out arena tour? Where was Jackie's string of top 10 hits?

I think she’s mediocre and I hate when people equate her to Michael as his female version because I feel it’s an insult to Michael’s talent.

Even a watered down version of Michael is still pretty excellent.
1989-1993 Janet is pure bliss.
1986-1988 is lovely also
1993-1995 also has some high points.
But yeah man, that 'janet' album alone. Mm.

She has a couple of alright songs, but I don't think her music has lasted that well. Certainly I think other similar artists like Madonna or Whitney Houston have had a better long-term impact on the general public. Most of the time I hear her brought up is by Michael Jackson fans on websites/social media like this. In saying that I can recognize her influence on other musicians though. Following and alongside with Madonna, she was pretty influential in the concept of what we have come to know as the female pop star and you can see many female popstars recognize and respect her for that.
As for the Michael vs. Janet comparison, I mean I'm preaching to the choir on this sort of forum but Michael Jackson is hands down one of the greatest music artists of all time. You compare almost anyone to him, even amazing musicians, and he's always going to be making a very strong case for himself. It's because of that I don't really compare anyone to him. I don't think you need to be close to the best of the best to be enjoyable, y'know?

I enjoy some of Janet's music, but let's face it: if she had stumbled into a record company office and didn't have that famous last name, and gave a demonstration of her voice seeking a record deal - she would have been politely escorted out of the office with a firm NO.
There are countless individuals singing locally, in clubs, in small bars, etc.. with far more vocal and musical prowess than Janet Jackson, but they don't have the benefit of a super-famous family, and brilliant producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
That said, I don't hold it against Janet at all. She's made the most of her opportunities - good for her.

But I think that the R&B style suited her voice really well and she only did things that worked for her. But her music videos are really great (she is almost up there with MJ and Madonna in that aspect imo, Rhythm Nation or If were really ahead of their time and they have also some very great choreography). She is a great dancer and her tours in the nineties were spectacular. As far as I know she wrote almost every lyric for the Janet album, her biggest album and definitely one of her best. And we really can't deny the impact she had on female popstars. So I don't think it is really fair to say that she only made it that far because she is a Jackson. Why didn't have LaToya a career then?

Yeah, but you could say exactly the same thing about Madonna (who I know you are a huge fan of). There is more to a great popstar than just their vocal ability. Give me Janet's back catalogue over Mariah's, Christina's, Whitney's any day of the week.

Ironically, or coincidentally - both Mariah & Janet released their best albums in 1993 and then quickly dropped quality. Music Box is a lovely album from Mariah and the club mixes she re-recorded & released were superb (Anytime You Need A Friend & Dreamlover specifically)

Music Box is a lovely album from Mariah and the club mixes she re-recorded & released were superb (Anytime You Need A Friend & Dreamlover specifically) I think Mariah got better in the mid-90s personally. That whole Music Box era, with all the covers and everything, it was all a bit karaoke for me. Janet peaked both visually and artistically with The Velvet Rope and was on a steady decline after that, reaching the nadir of her career with albums like Discipline, where she didn't write a solitary track on the album and started resembling Rhianna more than Janet Jackson. I thought Unbreakable was a nice return to form. The album kind of loses steam in the second half, but the first half is tight and contains some of the most authentically Janet sounding music since the 90s, largely helped by Jam & Lewis being back at the helm and Janet sounding as if she had something to say for the first time in a long time.
