MICHAEL JACKSON WAS ALSO CONSIDERED TO PLAY JARETH.
In the early stages, The Goblin King was just going to be another non-human creature, and off of that, Terry Jones wrote a script where Jareth doesnโt show up until halfway through the movie. He got a note from Henson that said Michael Jackson was now going to play Jareth, so he had to appear throughout the movie, singing. Negotiations with the Jackson camp came to a standstill and that's when Henson outlined the movie with Bowie and met with him a couple of times over two years to give him updates on the development of the film before Bowie agreed to the part.

Although it's hard to imagine anyone other than Bowie playing The Goblin King, you just know MJ would've nailed this role in an alternate universe.

But then he kind of did his own thing with Captain Eo, which is kind of similar, with puppets and all. Interestingly, both Labyrinth and Captain Eo are from the same year (1986), so that probably had something to do with why Henson went with Bowie in the end. I'm sure in 1986, MJ would've been there number one choice. Pic of MJ, Henson and Kermit from 1984:
