Remember when the documentary “Leaving Neverland” looked like it was going to hurt Michael Jackson’s legacy? Remember all the calls for banning Jackson’s music from radio, from the culture? Well, it didn’t work out that way. According to numbers from BuzzAngle, Michael’s music has soared in 2019. (I must say, I was surprised.) To date, Jackson’s numbers for Album Sales including streaming, downloads, and CD purchases are up 15.7% over 2018. His total at this point last year was 425,330. This year it’s 498,806. Jackson’s CD sales are down slightly, but that’s true for just about every recording artist. His streaming numbers are a different story, however. His streaming (audio, video, etc) is up 39.7% over last year. (We’re using the same 30 week period each year.) Jackson’s total streaming so far in 2019 is 1,127,200,908. Yes, over 1 billion. Jackson has been dead since June 2009 and even then hadn’t issued a record of new material since 2001. Roughly a third of Jackson’s album sales this year come from “Thriller” and its singles, and individual tracks. This information should come as good news to the Jackson estate. They’ve still got a Broadway musical cooking for next year. It was briefly derailed, but with Jackson’s music’s popularity on the rise, they should feel emboldened to move ahead. Maybe all publicity really is good publicity! www.showbiz411.com/2019/07/29/michael-jackson-album-2019-sales-streams-up-significantly-despite-documentary-scandal-and-calls-for-bans-on-his-musicOne big... to all dissenters. Interesting. Scream came out last year, so thats why CD sales would be down I suppose. Scream was the year before. Albeit towards the end of the year.

The "mute MJ" campaign hasn't quite worked out for Oprah and others. LOL.

Re. CDs. It's just that people don't really buy CDs any more. CD sales are going down for everyone. With Spotify and all I don't even know when I last bought a CD.

Re. CDs. It's just that people don't really buy CDs any more. CD sales are going down for everyone. With Spotify and all I don't even know when I last bought a CD. Yup. I haven’t bought one in over 3 years now myself. My collection is just collecting dust haha. Seems to be the case with most of my friends too, however the ones that seem to still be into buying physical media are buying vinyl records instead.

Interesting article:
This part sums it up.
"When he played R. Kelly at a wedding, “Everyone was just like, ‘Ooh, he’s playing this right now?’ ... And they just kinda walked off the dance floor.” His advice to others: “Definitely stay away from R. Kelly at all costs, unless you get a request from a bride or groom.”
The reaction to Jackson was the same as it’s always been: People dance. Spinelli said he still plays MJ at every wedding and hasn’t had any requests from clients to leave him off the playlist."

I only buy occasional box sets now and because myself and the misses are into Kpop we do get the BTS, Blackpink and other Kpop albums because they offer soooo much more than a mere jewel case cd. Kpop albums are works of art for anyone into aesthetics and extras. The albums come in book form, or a unique style box or design specific to that album, posters, photo cards, postcards, specially themed photo books, QR codes for discounts, and a few other things unique to whatever group or artist you buy. The music is almost secondary because it’s on Spotify and the amazing MV’s on YouTube. The Korean’s know how to package a cd as a beautifully presented package that’s all about visual presentation. Our jewel cases are obsolete at this point. And I’m a fan of the physical product. I always loved CD’s but they just sit there covered in dust. I do have a pretty humble vinyl collection of about 50 albums. I would like to get into vinyl collecting one or two artists but I’m to taken up with Kpop. 😂😭🤣

I think that's definitely one way to bring some people back. I've also heard sometimes Kpop availability (at least, outside of the massive ones like BTS?) can be a bit sketchy on western streaming services so that would be another reason to buy their work, but I really wouldn't have a clue as I don't play Kpop.
I think the only type I would buy now is a proper boxset. Ringo Starr has confirmed there will be a 50th anniversary edition of Abbey Road coming out later this year, and being my favourite studio album of theirs I might shell out the cash to get that. Maybe. But if the Estate were to release a proper deluxe boxset of something for Michael Jackson, one with good quality extras, I'd like to think I'd get that too. I say "I'd like to think" mainly because the audio material usually gets made available on streaming services which I already pay for and given that's the primary attraction of the boxsets, well yeah. I normally just end up not buying it since I already have the main attraction 😂

I hear people play RKelly with no push back but after those tapes came out years ago people stopped fucking with him. Others kinda overlooked it.

The issue with R. Kelly is that most white people don't know any of his songs and only associate him with scandal. The big breakthrough for the Mute R. Kelly people was when Urban radio stopped playing him. White folks never listened to him outside of Ignition anyway.

OWN has been circling the drain for a long time. I don't think Oprah will let it fail even though it hasn't turned a profit in quite some time.

Are we still doing that thing where we mention hearing him in public? Because I was just out at a restaurant with the family and at one point Man in the Mirror came on! Heard a girl at a nearby table sing along partially to one of the choruses (to be fair she did to a couple of songs but hey) Guess it means just that little bit more since they took him off the airwaves here haha. I guess stores, bars and restaurants are yet to get the memo

But, my friend was out in Galway (the best city to go out in Ireland) and she text me saying Dirty Diana came on when she was out. I'd kill to hear that on a night out!

But, my friend was out in Galway (the best city to go out in Ireland) and she text me saying Dirty Diana came on when she was out. I'd kill to hear that on a night out! Nice! Truthfully I've noticed more Jacksons/J5 music while out (one time a month ago I was at a bar with work colleagues, 3 of their songs played!), it's only the last couple month or two I've noticed solo MJ come back into play. Honestly when you have a bit of alcohol in you and a song by one of your most favourite artists comes on, it's just pure bliss. I get super happy and the MJ-esque moves just come on out 😂
ALSO while I'm on the topic of drinking, the last few times my mates and I have had pre-drinks at my place, I've been in control of the media we watch and I've put Moonwalker on a few times! Not in full mind you, just segments. Speed Demon's great fun and Smooth Criminal just leaves you in awe. Last time my friend and I freak out like "WHO THE HELL DOES THIS??? NO ONE MAKES MUSIC VIDEOS LIKE THIS" as MJ casually lowers himself on the stairs and jumps down to join the dancing gangsters. Ugh. Fuck I love that man.
