I find D&P to be quite weak and chock full of mediocre material. Daddy Pop, Willing & Able, Push, Jughead are all filler. And Cream is one of his corniest, most overrated singles. Thunder is embarrassingly pompous and OTT. The only truly great songs and saving graces from D&P are Money Don't Matter 2nite and Gett Off. Love Symbol is so much better.I agree, I think D&P is kinda average too. I do enjoy Daddy Pop and Willing & Able though, the latter is probably my favorite track on the album. Enjoy Strollin' (except for the synths), D&P, Money Don't Matter too. The Symbol album is definitely stronger overall though. But imo the best album of the early 90s is the one Prince cared the least about - Come. I have to disagree. I've always thought that the Love Symbol album is really dated as a whole, though I do love 7.

1. Erotica - I f****n love this thing, every song is a masterpiece and Madonna is complete bitch through it, which I love. She truly didn't give a shit how it wasa received but was happy many of us were open minded enough to love it. Erotica is a classic and to me, my favourite Madonna album, tied with American Life. I was 15 when it came out and it just opened up a whole new world to me. It is such a stylish and cool record and I adore the whole underground dingy vibe to it. Why's It So Hard for me is the best album track on it.

I was 15 when it came out and it just opened up a whole new world to me. It is such a stylish and cool record and I adore the whole underground dingy vibe to it. Why's It So Hard for me is the best album track on it. A classic? LMAO! Talk about delusional. The reviews of the album were mixed, and it sold less than half of what Like a Prayer did. It sounds like every other early 1990s dance album that had new jack swing elements thrown in for good measure to keep up with the popular fad of the time. The entire era was desperate and calculated. I remember seeing Madonna on David Letterman. She acted like a 12-year-old who thought she was cool for cussing. People were tired of her and her insatiable appetite for controversy and gimmicks. She was such a try-hard in the early 1990s. She’s the one who pushed sleaze and sex into music videos in a way no artist had ever done before, completely dumbing down the industry in the process. Erotica left the public's consciousness years ago, it's barely talked about or ever referenced nowadays. Along with American Life and Bedtime Stories it's one of Madonna's most forgotten albums. It didn't even get to #1 in the UK or the US. The majority of the singles underperformed in most countries, none of them got to #1 in the UK or the US, in fact only two managed to break into the Top 10 on the Hot 100. Sales in the UK were especially dire. The title track barely sold 270,000 copies while Bad Girl and Fever didn't even hit the 100,000 mark. I can't even remember the last time I heard any of the songs played on any major radio stations. She tried to soften her image somewhat with Bedtime Stories and although it didn't fare much better commercially, artistically it was a far superior album. The only keepers on Erotica are Bad Girl and Rain. Bedtime Stories had at least four songs that could easily be considered amongst her best work (Take A Bow, Human Nature, Secret and Don't Stop). But I think Erotica did lasting damage, which is why Bedtime Stories only sold a relatively modest 9mil worldwide. That may seem like a respectable amount, but it's not even close to what artists like Mariah, Janet, MJ or George Michael were selling in the mid-90s. And I blame Erotica for that. The awful Sex book didn't help. It was nothing more than a recreation of Irving Klaw's work with Bettie Page in the 1950s, the title track led to Fairuz successfully suing Madonna for plagiarism (now THAT'S reductive), and the imagery was heavily inspired by Marilyn Monroe, Louise Brooks and other old school actresses and pop culture icons like Andy Warhol (again). The Girlie Show was a mish-mash of ideas that performers had already experimented with. Madonna ripped off Janet Jackson's military routine from the Rhythm Nation era in the late 1980s, she dressed up as Bette Davis for the hundredth time to perform an uninspired disco routine, and the rest of the show mixed elements of theatre and burlesque that Kate Bush, Bette Midler, Nina Hagen, Liza Minnelli, Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel had already experimented with in the 1970s and 1980s. I know Madonna fans like to think Erotica was the first album by a female artist to touch on sex and other taboo subjects like sex and AIDS but Kate Bush, George Michael, Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, Boy George, Donna Summer and Nina Hagen had already done it.

But it was Madonna and it was amusing, Letterman needed to be taken down a peg or two and afterwards he purred like a kitten whenever Madonna came on. I was ready for Erotica, having been a big Madonna fan since I was 8 with Like a Virgin and after the sexiness of Like a Prayer and me freaking out over how fabulous Vogue and Justify my love were when I was 14. I had videocassettes full of the uncut version of JML where you see that woman's tits and thought it was so daring. I loved Madonna as she did what the hell she wanted and didn't give a shit. I don't agree she was like Betti Page or Marilyn, she was Madonna and Madonna was shock and awe. That is what attracted me to her. It was the image and the fact Erotica had the music to back it up, Deeper and Deeper, erotica, Rain, Bad Girl, Theif of Hearts, waiting for you - all of those songs are just gems. I actually got bored with her afterwards, she had moments but nothing compared to the golden Like a Prayer to Erotica era. I do agree though that Secret, Take a Bow and Human Nature are amongst her best (Oops I didn't know I couldn't speak my mind - what was I thinking?) Then again I really love parts of all her later albums and consider Hardy Candy a masterpiece too. RussG I guess I am one weird Madonna fan.

Most Madge stans adore Erotica and are ambivalent towards Bedtime Stories. Perhaps I was a little harsh on Erotica, its just that that album was the first of hers that disappointed me, and so even though in retrospect, it is far superior to anything she's released in the 00s, I'll always associate that record with my initial disappointment. I forgot to mention that Deeper & Deeper is Hi-NRG dancefloor perfection. I just never got on board with the album tracks. But even the most filler cuts on Erotica are a damn masterpiece compared to Rebel Fart and her dreadful new songs. I have this unfair reputation on this board that I'm some kind of Madonna troll or hater. I'm not, I just have grown weary of my all-time favorite female artist releasing mediocre music.

Michael Jackson's best album first
But then Madonna's best album Erotica next
Then Janet's best album
George fourth, a great album but not as good as the 3 above.
For Carey I would have put Music Box in there. I loved that when it came out & her last good album.
This is why I loved that period Dangerous, Erotica & janet all scoring loads of top singles, videos & an amazing tour by each artist that I was lucky enough to go to. Madonna's Girlie Show is just stunning.

Good post, I have to agree - From Bedtime stories, her output became more mediocre, despite many highlights on most albums and some better than dull albums (Hard Candy, Music and Rebel Heart, but even those are larded down with bad filler), Madonna's output after 1992 has been very patchy. Yet Prince was bagged heavily for his post 1990 output and his music after then is much better than Madonnas, who hardly gets bagged for her duets with Nicki Minage and others. To be honest Madonna should have retired years ago, I love her, but chile she is 60 forcrissake and still acting like she is 25. Madonna is becoming a parody of herself and really the female version of those singing trilobites, the Rolling Stones.

Even though he too suffered a dip in quality control, he never sunk to the depths of duetting with Nikki Minaj or getting Justin Timberlake to write songs for him. Even Prince's shit songs still sound unmistakably Prince.

And yet today after hearing it again and reading about Madame X, I am suddenly interested in her again. Maluma Medellin is a pretty good song.
About Prince, exactly, his very worst songs are not really him, like the abominale "Boytrouble" off Plectrum Electrum - its those girls and the awful "Like a Mack" off Phase 1 mainly that Curly Fries rapper.
Still Madonna of late lacks consistently, I love off Rebel Heart about 6 songs and yet the rest are unlistenable to the point I can not remembre their names - yet Ghosttown and Icon are basically classics. I agree with what you are saying indirectly and in my more direct terms "The bitch needs to learn some damn quality control!"
