Terrific Damita Jo review from Pitchfork, part of their Sunday Reviews series. I think it's a really thoughtful write-up. Damita Jo has always been my favorite post-Velvet Rope Janet album (until Unbreakable, that is): pitchfork.com/reviews/albums...son-damita-jo/

I always liked it. There's some really great slow-jams on there especially Truly and I Want You. Hell, I even like Moist.
I wouldn't say it was her best post-TVR album, but it's a solid effort.
The only outright bad album Janet ever made was Discipline. And even that had a few good cuts, especially Feedback which should've been a big hit for her.

I think All For You is her strongest until Unbreakable. Son Of A Gun, Trust A Try, Doesn't Really Matter, When We Oooo are all great tracks. The only thing that lets that album down is the sex tracks (Love Scene and Would You Mind), which are just tacky and gross. And I hate the artwork and album cover. It looks so corny, compared to how cutting edge she was around TVR era. But as an album, it's much stronger than DJ, Discipline and 20Y0, IMO.

I actually think Damita Jo was the last good album she made beginning to end. Unbreakable was half a good record, but goes off the boil in the second half and wasn't the return to form that many fans made it out to be.
The albums she made after Damita Jo were largely garbage.
