The Epic Years!!
In November 1976, following the debut of the family's weekly variety series, the Jacksons released their self-titled CBS debut under the Philadelphia International subsidiary, produced by Gamble & Huff. Featuring "Enjoy Yourself" and "Show You the Way to Go", the album went gold but failed to generate the sales the brothers had enjoyed while at Motown. Michael Jackson fan, singer, runner and star of the Behind The Mask music video @innuendo141 had the following to say on The Jacksons self titled album “Easily 3rd. Its a fantastic album, and you can feel the breath of life in it. Its airy, light hearted but glimpses of personality and deeper meaning peering through. There isn't one bad tune on this album.
Keep on Dancing is the tune for me. Especially watch it live in 78 or 79. The last 3 songs are essential and are the real prelude to the attitude of Destiny.“

Listen to the album hereHIStoryPhiladelphia International heads Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff produced and executive produced the album, including their first top ten hit in two years " Enjoy Yourself", but had a difficult time focusing on a sound for the now-grown-up boy band. However, the group was able for the first time to record their own material, something that had been denied to them at Motown. The Jacksons composed "Style of Life" and "Blues Away" on their own. "Blues Away" was the first published song written by lead singer Michael Jackson, who began to take a more percussive vocal approach beginning with this album. This album also spawned a second successful R&B single, " Show You the Way to Go" (UK No. 1). Though never released as a single, "Good Times" became a popular album cut from regular quiet storm airplay. The album itself placed No. 36 and No. 6 on the pop and R&B album charts respectively. The album was the Jacksons' first gold album, despite their having sold more than 10 million albums while at Motown (Motown's sales and financial records were not presented for auditing by the RIAA until 1976). Renewing their contract with Epic, the Jacksons were allowed full creative control on their next recording, Destiny, released in December 1978. Featuring their best-selling Epic single to date, " Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", written by Michael and Randy, the album sold over a million copies. You a fan of this album Nigel? Where would you rank it among Jacksons albums? On first glance you see it’s got Enjoy Yourself, Blues Away and Show You The Way To Go. Moving beyond those obvious standouts Nigel, is there anything else you feel fans should have a listen to? Also, how do you post larger pictures of album sleeves?

I actually am eager to get the 2009 Japanese remaster of this. I recently bought the recent pressing which I haven't spun yet. This is probably my "favourite album that I don't consider a favourite album".

I’m still buying CD’s for artists I love but only if they offer something extra like Prince’s 1999 boxset or extra bonus tracks, but the standard western jewel case CD is such a boring and almost pointless purchase at this point. My dream -more of a fantasy really- is to have everything on Japanese pressings; mini vinyl cds for Prince, J5/Jacksons and MJ! Edit] As well as on Japanese vinyl obviously!

The MJ/Jacksons mini LP CDs are pretty cool to be fair, and Victory and Live are both great remasters. Especially great is Victory is the LP version of the Album. But I'm mad to hear some remasters of some of the gems on the 76 album

I might begin the Japanese thing within the next few weeks but my next purchase was going to be the Prince Sign Super Deluxe box which I’ve just began putting some money away for. I was about to share a link for it on here last night for the Super Deluxe CD box for £101:00 from Amazon Italy on preorder but when I went to share it they had removed the very low price and now they have pricing for it as of yet. I wasn’t quick enough I guess.

Mad price, but this set is worth it as far as I'm concerned. 9 disc Deluxe edition of The Jacksons please 😂

And then I look at MJ’s legacy; J5/Jacksons/Solo and just steer into the abyss at the amount of quality that’s slept on! You have The Jackson Family 76 Variety Series that could be packaged as a dvd with an album, the tours and possibly god knows how many alternative takes, demos and unreleased tracks. I hate beating a dead horse but it saddens me a lot.
