There are certain songs that can really move or inspire. Some lyrics to me can be powerful tools. Or they can really offer a glimpse of the inner artist who wrote them.
For instance, with Michael Jackson I can't listen to "When I'm gone, this problem world won't bother me no more," without feeling a massive punch to the chest. And that's one single line, in just one of his songs. Because those few words actually say SO MUCH.
Anyway, I don't know if this topic is actually of interest to anyone, but I wanted to talk about a couple of my favourite lyrics of another artist, and if anyone fancies it, they can share their favourite lyrics.
I wanted to talk about two Madonna lyrics. One actually reminds me of the Michael lyric above. The whole issue of a celebrity being an easy target to hurt/slander. Michael's lyrics say it all - and so does Madonna in her song Joan of Arc. This song is about how the media have made her feel in the past. And one lyric in particular really hits it home:
Being destructive isn't brave
They couldn't say it to my face
One day I won't care
But for the moment I'm not there
I'll just close my eyes and let you catch me now
I don't wanna talk about it right now
Just hold me while I cry my eyes out
I'm not Joan of Arc, not yet
But I'm in the dark, yeah
There's just something about the lyrics to this song that remind me of Michael's trial with the media in his life. If anyone doesn't know the song, it's from Rebel Heart album, and here's a video of it. I recommend it because the whole song is actually beautiful:
So, one more example, if you'll stick with me.
Madonna has a track entitled QUEEN that was a bonus song of the Rebel Heart album. I absolutely love it. And in it, there is a middle eight section where she talks about how people are realising the greats of music are gone and now they are left with the pale imitations. (At least, that's my interpretation of it.. That's what it makes me think of, anyway). The song itself is amazing, but the middle lyrics really hit home because they remind me of the loss of Michael and Prince to the music industry, and the fact we are left with pale imitations...
Who will take their place?
It's written on everyone's face
The truth is dawning - I feel tomorrow calling
Some things can't be replaced
the realisation of the new generation
on the eve of imitation
All gone, overthrown.
May God bless you all
Anyway, I hope this thread wasn't too boring. I thought it'd be interesting to share other people's favourite lyric examples with links to the songs. It's sometimes a great way to get into new tracks or even artists...
