Okay, so there's two parts to this.
Choose 3 songs to either: a. introduce someone to MJ b. make a casual fan into a super one
The difference is that for the second one, you probably wouldn't choose the usual stuff from Thriller or Bad.
For me: a. introduce someone to MJ: 1. Billie Jean 2. Smooth Criminal 3. Earth Song
I think these 3 really show the depth & breath of his work, whilst still being relatively accessible
b. make a casual fan into a super one 1. Will You Be There 2. Who Is It (full version) 3. Little Susie
I think although these are more complex & less commercial, they show how much Michael's songwriting matured & progressed in the 90's. Plus the vocals are stunning. If you only knew the King Of Pop/Number Ones overplayed stuff, these songs would be a real surprise to you. Those who think Michael Jackson was all about pop and (hate the term) fluff, then these would throw out any notion of that. I would also choose Give In To Me but didn't want to choose all from Dangerous!

I think most people think they've got a pretty good idea of what MJ is about, just because he's got so many famous hits. But I wager that very few people outside his hardcore fanbase are aware of the depth and quality of some of his lesser known work, especially from the 90s. As far as I'm concerned, the following songs should b mandatory listening in schools, the way every kid is forced to read To Kill A Mockingbird in highschool:
1. Who Is It 2. Is It Scary 3. They Don't Care About Us

I'd first try to get a feel of what kind of music that person likes and would try to adjust my choices to that (more rocky songs for rock fans, more R&B oriented one for R&B fans etc.).

My friends (age 17-20) really liked Who is It, They don't care about us, Heartbreaker and Liberian Girl. But i guess it really depends on the person. I know someone who really loves rock and he is a big fan of Give into me and D.S

Yeah, TDCAU is usually a success. Beat It too. Billie Jean obviously.

I think there is a tendency to take artists like MJ or The Beatles for granted. Legendary acts who have tonnes of famous and iconic songs that people grew up knowing... I think I've been guilty of it in the past, and it's only when you take the time to really sit down and listen to these songs properly that you realise what works of art they actually are.

I recall one time chatting about MJ with a work colleague/friend who knew I was a fan and she asked what I considered to be his best work and if I could recommend anything. I ended up making her a compilation CD. She came in the next day and I asked her what she thought of the CD, and she just looked at me and grinned, all she said was "Who Is It."

My friend shows me new music (K-Pop) and I show her MJ. We keep each other 'up to date' and it works really well.
She was blown away by the Beat it Demo. She loves Liberian Girl, Keep the Faith,Dangerous,Earth Song and Heaven Can wait Her favourite performance is Working Day and Night 1992. She is not a fan but she really appreciates MJ now.
Mission accomplished muhahha

Good question!
To introduce a new person to the world of Michael Jackson (Prefer if they watch videos, particularly number 2)
1. Billie Jean (This is the song that made most of the world a fan or at least sit up and pay attention) 2. Smooth Criminal - Because people need to see how he can move. If you can't get this - Beat It will do 3. The Way you make me feel - Because they can see he could do great pop and dance songs too. Plus it is catchy. Extra - Must be able to see Michael do a moonwalk or a lean dance.
Casual to Hardcore
1. Will you be there (Totally agree with OP), This song has his sincerity, his vocal range and shows his interest in deeper topics. 2. Is it Scary - A song that pulls you right in, and there is a vocal range 3. Heartbreak Hotel - So casual fans can see how Michael's solo career would branch out of his role in the Family band, and if they became fans through Thriller or Bad, they can see how Michael reached the state of recording albums like that.
Extra Credit - Listen to related artists and Family Recordings eg: Janet, Jermaine, Jackson5/s, TTD, Prince, Whitney, George Michael.
