I don't think Michael needs a movie treatment, the Lifetime movie based on the bodyguards book is cringe worthy at best. Even though Ephraim Sykes seems excited to be part of the musical, I'm still resistant to see other people characterized as Michael from 1992 onwards. What type of makeup or prosthetics will be used to show the MJ void of pigment because of vitiligo and not making Ephraim looking like a Michael caricature like most impersonators look? People or fans can say whatever they think about his nose, lupus is a nasty disease and caused his nose not looking its best at times but Michael handled his disfiguring diseases with dignity and he didn't look like the grotesque caricature the media and tabloids have portrayed What I'd love to see is a biodocumentary in the style of the Amy doc or the Bob Marley one. Let Michael Jackson, the artist, the human being to speak for himself. I bet my ovaries there are tons more of video footage in his archives since Paul McCartney told him he regretted not filming his Beatles days. Give the director for Senna and Amy the access to the vault and let him create a docu film based on the footage and interviews available, and let everything tell its own story. I hated Bo Rhap. Awful film. I wouldnt have any expectations for this. How the hell do you put MJs entire life/career in a film and expect to tell a story? Nah man. Estate rushed this.

There's every chance this could have a massively positive impact. Possibly.

Bee Gees are getting the Bo Rap/Rocketman treatment too. Wonder which excrescence will appear first.

I agree. I'd be much more excited about that. I am a much lesser fan of Freddie Mercury than MJ but already in the case of BR I said I don't see the point of watching someone mime to Queen's songs in a film when I can watch the original footage with the actual Freddie. I'd feel even more so about MJ, I think. Though The Jacksons: An American Dream was actually a good movie. But that was the easier part: about his childhood up until Thriller. It's after that that MJ's portrayal gets complicated. Whose version of MJ will it be?

I think the film would be great as Michael had an amazing career. My only concern is if they make it too cliche, or if they make it too negative. I’d love a well made film on his life, but not in the style of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Really though Michael had such a long career it would take multiple films to even scratch the surface.

At least this is probably years away. Although goodness knows what state MJ's reputation will be in by then with an Estate thinking they can just weather every storm.

Yeah, whilst I'm not saying the estate have done nothing, the fans have made a much more forceful impact when it comes to social media and general online awareness of the truth, and I feel the estate don't really realise how much fans are doing. Once something becomes big online it's incredibly hard to penetrate the narrative.

I don't know how you can make a movie about a life as big as Michael Jackson's and condense it down to 2-3 hours. A 10-12 hour limited series on Netflix or something? Yeah sure, but not 1/4 of that. Look at Bohemian Rhapsody that spanned 15 years. The first half absolutely SPED by as they tried to include everything that happen in the 1970s, only to slow down in the second half to focus on a couple of years. The second half was much better paced, but combined with the first half makes for a pretty unevenly paced film. Hell even Rocketman shuffles some things around so that it really only ends in the early 80s, despite the fact Elton has still been quite active since then.
Nighty is correct, this will take years to make so don't expect to see it until... probably 2022 at the very, very earliest. I'm going to try and remain positive about it, I try to, but it's going to take a lot of work to get someone who can both look and sound like MJ without coming off like a caricature. It's filmmaking, there's lots of ways to do it (have a good actor who looks like him, then dub him with a good voice impersonator), but Michael Jackson isn't your typical person or musician. It's really easy to lose the balance that is so delicately required.
Then there's things like the child molestation cases, they're so fucking complicated even I forget stuff about them all the time. How do you show that in 20-30 minutes? How accurately will they portray things? Again, it would be better served in a limited series that could dedicate a few hours to it. Hell Michael wasn't even allowed to talk about details related to the 1993 case, wouldn't that extend to the Estate too...? 🤷♂️
Like a lot of you, I don't think this is needed. I'm not holding my breath because there's so many things that can go wrong, and trying to condense his entire event-filled life to a measly 2-3 hours is already reaaallly pushing it. I do like a number of films John Logan has done though, The Aviator is a great biopic (though I suspect it's earlier to condense Howard Hughes life than Michael Jacksons).

Amy was a great documentary, and this is coming from someone who doesn't listen to her. I would MUCH rather prefer a documentary or documentary series over a fictionalised-up account.

Movies are about entertainment firstly so I expect things to be changed and shuffled around. I knew going into borap that it would be that way and I really enjoyed it. When you are dealing with some of the stuff that MJ had to deal with it does become a bit harder though.
