One Day in Your Life Liberian Girl Stranger in Moscow
BTW, someone on LSA wrote that she's a teacher and she played the Bad album for her students in class and they were very enthusiastic about it. The favorite song of the kids was Liberian Girl which is a bit unexpected, but nice. That song is definitely a gem.

You'll have to ask ghost why she chose to exclude WYBT from her poll, but I still don't see it as a ballad. It starts off like a ballad, but then by the time the gospel choir come in and MJ is screaming his head off, it doesn't feel like a ballad anymore. If WYBT is a ballad, then would you also consider Earth Song one as well?

If WYBT is a ballad, then would you also consider Earth Song one as well? I can see what you mean about the middle (mainly the third verse), but it seems to swing right back round with that extended spoken word ending? I mean I've generally just thought a ballad to be an emotional song about someone or something personal... and I can certainly see that with most of WYBT, as if MJ is addressing someone in particular.
As for Earth Song... well I thought not, but Wikipedia describes political/anti-war/protest songs as having the potential to be sentimental ballads of a lesser extent. That they are "usually slow in tempo, ballads tend to have a lush musical arrangement which emphasize the song's melody and harmonies..." and that they sometimes use an orchestral set. That seems to fit with Earth Song (which also funnily enough, Wikipedia does describes on the song's page as a ballad a handful of times, also referencing an outside source that describes it as such too).
In saying this, I'd be the first to admit my understanding of the word isn't the clearest. I've had a general idea but I haven't really looked into it's meaning before this thread.

Listened to Childhood today for the first time in ages.
Starting to think it's his most underrated song.

I actually think there is an ambiguity about what constitutes a ballad and what doesn't. I've seen fans describe Heaven Can Wait, Break of Dawn and Butterflies as ballads, but to me, they're mid-tempo jams. I don't think there's any right or wrong answer (unless you're going to start calling Smooth Criminal a ballad, when it clearly isn't).
