Does anyone else get fed up when they really ponder the fact that now MJ is gone, and all the other greats (Queen, David Bowie, Prince etc) there just doesn't feel like there's much "hope" left for the future of music.
I still have artists I love, like Madonna, Morrissey and Kate Bush, but I feel like the ultimate artists are gone, leaving us only with the empty singers who are there because they're pretty or won the X Factor.
I actually feel sorry for future generations. They'll actually grow up believing Justin Beiber is talented, or have to look back on artists that are long gone. We were all so, so fortunate to be here during the time of Michael Jackson.
Do you realise how lucky we are? One day I will tell my children's children (I have a baby) that yes, I actually saw Michael Jackson live. That'd be like my mum telling me she saw Elvis or Marilyn Monroe. It's an amazing, amazing honour. We were there. Besides Michael.
What will future generations have left... nothing. Music business is getting empty. I am in my thirties but I bet I sound like a 90 year old lol..."Music was better in my day...!" Lol.

Well I'm 19, never saw MJ live, never experienced Michael Mania (apart from his death). But at least they will have Bruno, Beyoncé etc. They are great performers.

Ah, I'm sorry dancingmjsdream! I know there are many, many fans who never saw him live, I guess I just got caught up in my own personal experience.
I do think the music business seems to get more depressing as time goes on, though.

I'm glad that you saw him live, I bet your kid will love all your great MJ stories!
I don't think there is really much to look forward to. Many of the greats have passed away and sadly there will be more deaths in the coming decades. I just don't like how mainstream music sounds now, I hope there will always be lesser known artists/bands who dare to do something innovative and different.

What's happening to me is, the older I'm getting the more detached I'm feeling regarding current music and popular culture in general. Another thing that slightly depresses me is the whole phone thing. Airports, restraunts, walking down the street, most of the world is glued to their phone screen. There's little to no interaction. I need to smile at people, say hi with my eyes and get it back from time to time. The Internet has turned people into junkies and its completey excepted. Then you have lunitic divisive leaders helping the world turn on itself.
But getting back to the music thing, yeah, let's be honest also, Kate Bush, Tori Amos etc all have done their best work also. The album is no longer what it used to be.

I tend to agree, except last few years it seems to have given birth to a few 'superstars' again, albeit not on the MJ,Madonna, Prince level.
Beyoncé, Timberlake, Adele and Ed Sheeran. Even if you're not a fan, they are talented, very talented with a huge fan base with longevity. Taylor Swift also.
Much better than 2000-2010 where it seemed all about talent shows and shit like Pitbull etc.
In terms of looking forward to music, In terms of big releases it's only Madonna, and then my more indie acts like Suede and Fratellis..

I have no doubt her later albums are pretty good, but I'm more talking about the times we are living in right now. The first thing is because of the Internet now everybody has an opinion and people are rarely satisfied with anything anymore. Not just Tori Amos. Even if MJ had lived and released his album during or after This Is It would it have been received like anything from OTW to HIStory? I don't know, the album just doesn't seem to hold the same weight it once did. Or is it just me?

Alright general rant time. I'd hate to be cynical and ignorantly rants on about how crap current music is. This is something happens every single generation and many people fall into it. I was literally listening to some live Beatles material the other day (from '65) and John Lennon addresses the audience by saying "The next song we like to sing is our latest record... or our latest electronic noise, depending on whose side you're on". The Beatles literally made some of the greatest music that has ever existed, they're amongst the highest respect and most successful musicians in history... and even they got shut down by older people at the time. I'm not equating anyone in particular with their kind of music, but my point still stands. As with every generation, there is both great and bad music out there (I mean, this song of all songs knocked the Rolling Stones' off the top of the charts!!). Lots of great music is coming out all the time, and it's always going to be like that should artists have the opportunity to express themselves. The internet has opened up a world of opportunities for artists around the world who don't have any record deals but could be just as talented as those on the Top 40. A lot of what people my age play isn't necessarily just the Top 40, but a lot of material is by lesser known artists, many of whom are only available on Soundcloud/streaming services. I don't like all the music that comes out today, of course not and no one does with any generation. I just realise not all of it is for me, and I just focus on the music I do like and enjoy that. I think there's lots of great music to look forward to. There have been a great deal of songs that have come out this year that I have played countless times and spent countless hours dancing to, having the time of my life. I'm finding new songs all the time that I love, my latest favourite song only came out a week or so ago. "I feel so sorry for future generations because they'll grow up to believe Bieber is talented". Honestly stop being so patronising. Why would you feel sorry for future generations? They'll have access to even more great music than we do right now, along with all the greats you and I both love, so they'll be even better off. Why would you feel sorry for people who actually genuinely enjoy Bieber's music? They're the one having a good time, dancing to it and having the time of their life while you sit on an internet forum and complain about him. Justin Bieber actually is a pretty good musician. He's got a good voice, he's quite involved in both the writing and production of his songs and he plays a number of instruments. Don't get me wrong, you're free to not like his music but the man is talented. To deny that says more about yourself than it does about him frankly. You don't have to dig someone's art to admit they're talented, ya know? Honestly the only thing I can agree with you on Liberian Girl is the fact that you older folk got to see some of the older legends like Michael Jackson, Bowie etc and that is pretty cool. I'd have loved to have seen them! There have been some current artists though who still put on some pretty fantastic shows, shows I'll love and remember until the very day I die.

I'd have loved to have seen them! There have been some current artists though who still put on some pretty fantastic shows, shows I'll love and remember until the very day I die. Justin is heavily involved in the writing and production of his own songs, is he? Yeah, him and the other eight songwriters credited for writing his music. And the various producers who are paid handsomely to work on his albums, none of whom by the way, happen to be Bieber himself. Why is he a talented musician? Because there's a few videos of him playing the drums on Youtube, or a few photos of him holding an acoustic guitar? Have we really lowered our expectations of our popular artists that much? If he was such a talented musician, why isn't he playing instruments on his own records and why isn't he single-handedly writing his own music the way the likes of Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga do?
If you're going to defend his merits, at least do so knowing the facts. Take a look at the credits to his last album and you will see that he, like so many other modern popstars such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd, have teams of people writing their music for them. Beyoncé actually holds songwriting retreats, where she pays various different songwriting teams to attend a plush hotel suite for a long creative weekend, to come up with tracks for her latest album. This is not genuine artistry, not in the same way that The Beatles, or Prince or MJ came up with their music. Or even Ed Sheeran or Lady Gaga for that matter.
There IS good music still being made, an artist like Van Hunt for example - who isn't given the time of day by commercial radio - has been putting out consistently top quality, genre-bending, truly creative work for years now.
If you want new music to look forward to, it's still out there, but if you're looking for something substantial and something that will still be worth listening to 10 years from now, chances are you won't find much of it in the top 40. And if Justin Bieber is the best you have to offer, then I'm afraid Liberian Girl is right, we really are all doomed.
Fortunately, he's not even close to the best 2017 has to offer, so it's not quite as bleak as the OP made out.

I was shocked to see 60 songwriters credited on Beyoncé's Lemonade album. Wasn't it supposed to be a very personal album?
