Justin is heavily involved in the writing and production of his own songs, is he? Yeah, him and the other eight songwriters credited for writing his music. And the various producers who are paid handsomely to work on his albums, none of whom by the way, happen to be Bieber himself. Why is he a talented musician? Because there's a few videos of him playing the drums on Youtube, or a few photos of him holding an acoustic guitar? Have we really lowered our expectations of our popular artists that much? If he was such a talented musician, why isn't he playing instruments on his own records and why isn't he single-handedly writing his own music the way the likes of Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga do?
I never said he was "heavily involved", I just said he was quite involved in the production and the writing of the material he releases. Bieber's literally credited as producer on his latest albums (Not sure about his earlier albums, I don't care enough to check). I've seen footage here and there over the years in the studio, he usually has a big team in there with him (which explains the list of credits) but he does offer feedback on the production of his tracks IIRC.
He's a talented musician because he has a good singing voice and can play a number of instruments such as the piano, drums and the acoustic guitar. It's not just a few pretty photos as you claim, he literally performs it at his concerts and has even released a number of acoustic albums where he is playing the guitar too. Dude has a hand in his songwriting and production of his music. Friends of mine who have seen him live have told me he put on a good show, so he's also a good performer as well. Frankly, all that is talent to me. Is he the greatest musician ever, let alone today? Fuck no, but I reckon he's good, he's solid and his material has shown improvement over the years - so good on him.
What I will also say, however, is that I feel he has more potential than what he let's off. I would love him to see take on more of a role to that of Lady Gaga, who is much more heavily handed in the production and writing than Bieber has been. I think doing so (and especially if successfully) would gain him much more respect.
Maybe before you start preaching to others about facts, you should look up some yourself.
- "None of [the producers] happen to be Bieber himself" - Credited as both producer and executive producer on Purpose.
-"A few photos of him holding an acoustic guitar" - Not only does he play it live, but he has literally put out two acoustic adaptations of his albums where he plays the guitar.
Now, yes, obviously there is the whole question of the production team thing with modern pop stars. Do I care? Honestly? Not overly. As long as the artist is involved to some degree, and I like the music being produced, I really don't care.
That doesn't mean I'm going to equate Bieber, Beyonce, etc to the levels of Michael Jackson or The Beatles. Although to be fair, I equate almost no-one to those two artists. I'm always going to have more respect for artists who can take on more work themselves and pull it off successfully, but at the end of the day it's like I said, if you're involved to some degree and I like your music, I don't overly care.
If you want new music to look forward to, it's still out there, but if you're looking for something substantial and something that will still be worth listening to 10 years from now, chances are you won't find much of it in the top 40. And if Justin Bieber is the best you have to offer, then I'm afraid Liberian Girl is right, we really are all doomed.
I'm glad we can agree there is still good music though. If there's a way for creatives to put their music out there, there always will be good music coming out.
