Have you ever noticed this? When was the last time you saw an MJ impersonator who tried to replicate the Thriller/Bad era, physically with their appearance? Nearly all MJ impersonators go for the 90s/00s look, which I find quite strange, seeing as MJ's glory days, at least in the eyes of the public, were the 80s.

I think people think of Michael Jackson as the way he was in the last stages of his life. It's like when I think of my Nan who died - I don't remember how she was eighteen years ago, I remember how she looked and acted in more recent years. I know it's a poor example because my nan isn't a rock and roll legend (unfortunately) but it still illustrates my point in exactly the same way. People grow and change, and I think we always think of a person with their most physical appearance/stage in life.

I feel ya. When a friend of mine and me organized a big MJ fan event (800+ fans) we had this guy for a change. This photo is from our event in 2012.

MJ's look (both his physical appearance and his clothes) became more larger-than-life and eccentric in the late 80s and 90s. I guess they think it's easier to look like Michael if they throw on insane amounts of pale make-up and eyeliner, and put on a gold leotard - emphasis on 'they think'.
It's the same reason why Elvis impersonators always go for the 70s jumpsuits and huge sideburns, and Prince impersonators always wear something purple.

I don't know if any of you guys are familiar with him, but I found this other dude recently on YouTube who calls himself Michael Trapson. His way of impersonating Michael is a tad bit different. Oh, and he looks more like the '80s "Thriller" MJ. Sorry, I can see how this could be offensive, lol but it was the 1st thing that I thought of.

I've only seen one MJ impersonater in concert. I took my son to see Jalles Franca because I'd heard such good things and he didn't disappoint! I'm totally fine with him doing the 90s look because so many people remember Michael that way.
I'm guessing everyone here is familiar with Jalles, but in case you're not:
