Interesting thread. I knew she struggled with some mental issues but I didn't know this was going on.

I think a lot of her fans have their heart in the right place, but I just can't help but feel there's a lot we don't know about her mental state and the circumstances that lead to the conservatorship.
We do know that prior to it happening she was headed down a very bad path - she had a standoff with the police while she had custody of her kids wherein she threatened to kill herself, and was under the "management" of Sam Lufti who was pushing amphetamines to her.
The conservatorship may have saved her life even if it changed who she was a person or artist.

I've never liked her music, too mainstream pop for my taste but I have a soft spot for Britney because I see her in the eyes of exploited child stars like Shirley Temple, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland and even Michael and many of them ended up with serious issues because they were forced to work since a very young age.
I don't keep up with Britney but I genuinely thought she'd be better after that very public breakdown in 2007. I guess she was for a while but she relapsed. I promise to read the thread later but I hope she she's not being taken advantage of if she's in a vulnerable state of mind and she's receiving the help she needs.

Just bumping this thread so that I'm not reminded of Aaron Carter doing porn every time I log in. (sorry Tony) Cheers for that one Russ!
And, eh. Free Britney, I guess.

Britney Spears loses court bid to remove father's control over estate www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54897918A US court has rejected an attempt by Britney Spears, 38, to have her father removed as conservator of her estate. Jamie Spears has been his daughter's legal conservator for 12 years, due to concerns about her mental health. Ms Spears' lawyer said the pop star was "afraid" of him, and that she would not perform so long as he remained in the role. Her father's lawyer argued that he always acted in the best interests of his daughter. A judge said she would consider future appeals for his dismissal or outright removal. In the meantime, at the request of Ms Spears, financial company Bessemer Trust has been appointed as a co-conservator. During a hearing on Tuesday, Ms Spears' lawyer, Samuel Ingham, said she and her father have no "viable working relationship" and have not spoken in a "long while". But Vivian Thoreen, Jamie Spears' lawyer, argued that the reason they hadn't spoken was because Mr Ingham had advised Ms Spears against it. Ms Thoreen also defended Mr Spears' record as conservator. When he assumed the role, Ms Spears was fighting tens of millions of dollars in lawsuits. But under his guidance, Ms Thoreen said her business operation was now worth $60m (£45m). The legal battle is taking place against the backdrop of the "Free Britney" movement - a group of fans who believe Ms Spears is being kept prisoner by her father and others.

She hasn't been able to make decisions over her life and finances for the past 12 years but she's recorded albums, make world tours and residencies. It screams exploitation to me.

I'm not a "fan" of her music much, but that's irrelevant...I've been following this story and it's actually quite shocking and sad.
Britney lost full custody of both her children years ago, and was only allowed to visit them in recent years.
Her dad has "ruled" every aspect of her life for years. The kind of control he has is the legal equivalent of someone making decisions for a spouse with dementia. She's saying a) she doesn't need that b) doesn't trust her dad. In fact, she actually says she's frightened of him.
Yesterday's court ruling didn't remove her dad but has added a joint conservator so he can't act alone anymore, which I guess is something.
Even Britney's mum turned up to the recent court hearing saying the dad, Jamie, should be removed as the situation has become poison.

I love how they continue to allow her dad to control every aspect of her life whilst simultaneously allowing her to get on a stage and perform. Animals!
And if anything happens to this dear woman and she dies who then will take responsibility?!!
Sickening and another victim of Hollywood exploitation.

Lots of talk now and interest in the Framing Britney doc. There was a conversation about it on ITV now and they were talking about the control and media treatment also. The whole time I was obviously thinking of MJ as well also and the media treatment of him, and then one of the guests -an American lady who I think worked with Britney in some capacity- said that Britney’s childhood was like Michael Jackson.
Maybe this is going to change something in society? Maybe also open the door for MJ? Obviously this is Britney’s time but perhaps a sea change is on the horizon.

Just came on here to post this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-56003714The press are doing a full 360 & apologising for previous treatment. It also makes me hopeful for the same for MJ one day, but unfortunately where as mental health is now seen so differently, any form of allegation is now seen as guilt immediately so would take for the people who made an allegation towards MJ to revoke it before we saw any type of change of behaviour towards him change. It's funny though, it's only when someone dies (Amy Winehouse, Caroline Flack) or have some event like Britney's meltdown before anyone thinks they should apologise or 'be kind', but they don't change towards those who are still living. They still rip into Madonna like she's fair game and because she seems tough enough to cope with it they continue. When she dies she'll get the same hero treatment they hypocritically gave MJ.

I was so angry about the hypocritical treatment of mj after his death. It was a very hard world to live in, and enjoying him became depressing at the time

With the whole Britney thing blowing up now, just reminded me of this.
I'm not sure why Britney is considered a victim here, to be honest (the conservatorship, how she was exploited as a teen etc are a different thing). She did cheat on Justin, just like Wade did on Brandi. Why did Justin "have to" apologize to her? For writing a song about their break up? Do women also will have to apologize for all their man bashing breakup songs then too (Adele, Taylor Swift, Alanis Morisette, Lisa Marie Presley etc) or is it just a one way street now and men can't publish songs about cheating women and bad break ups any more but women will continue to be celebrated for doing the same to men? I am "looking forward to" the day when MJ will be made out to be a horrible person for Billie Jean and Dirty Diana.
