I was really struck when listening to Earth Wind & Fire today, by how much Prince aped Maurice White's vocal styling, and it's never more apparent than on I'll Write A Song For You:
Listen to that and then Prince's vocal delivery on songs like Betcha By Golly Wow, Adore, Scandalous, La La Means I Love You etc. Prince was obviously a big EW&F fan.
I thought it'd be interesting to start a thread to find other examples where singers have mimicked the vocal stylings of an artist that came before them. Anyone else have any examples to share?

Nice thread mjjfan810!
I would say a whole load of modern male R&B singers (Usher, Timberlake, NeYo, The Weeknd) mimic MJs vocal style, some more successfully than others.
The Weeknd does an admirable attempt, and you can tell NeYo has really sat down and studied MJ's vocals. Timberlake does a horrible job, but then he isn't all that talented to begin with.

Interesting thread.
IMO a lot of singers tried to mimic MJ's vocal style (some admitted it too like The Weeknd), but I don't think anyone came anywhere near. Not to make it about only MJ, but I love it how he used his voice in a percussive way. His vocals have so many nuances to it - from the singing style to the tone, pitch etc. that it is hard to totally get it right. But yes, he is definitely a big vocal inspiration for a lot of pop and R&B singers.
I also think Whitney is a great inspiration for a lot of female singers. At least on these American Idol type of talent shows you always see a lot of female singers trying to mimic her style. But like with MJ, I don't think anyone ever really came close.

all singers do it.
I mean as original and great as Ray Charles was he had Nat King Cole all over him
i can't think of one singer who came along and didn't sound like nobody else unless they were out of tune.
Rick James's "Dreammaker" had a direct influence on Prince.
Eddie Levert of the O'jays a had a direct influence on Rick James.
Michael Jackson influenced a whole lot of singers however MJ got his from Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, jackie WIlson, amongest others.

I completely agree, every singers vocal stylings can be traced back to an artist who came before. The intent of the thread was more to make those links, and show examples of songs which sound like they directly influenced another artists style of singing.

Justin Bieber tries to sound like a whiny little spoilt shit. And he succeeds. I actually think he has quite a good singing.voice, its just his music sounds generic and shitty and his personality is very obnoxious.
