I've always thought MJ was great at writing middle eights or "bridge" sections in his songs. A lot of my favourite parts of MJ songs are the middle eight sections.
So which one is your favourite?

I've added a poll. I've only included bridge sections that have words, so songs like In The Closet, Smooth Criminal, Threatened or Tabloid Junkie don't count, as they have instrumental bridges.

I agree, his middle eights are mostly awesome. Very pleased to see Heartbreaker doing so well, that one is probably the best moment on the whole of Invincible for me.
I also love the middle eight in Xscape:
"When I go, this problem world won't bother me no more"
Very poignant.
And of course, Morphine, which is just majestic.

Someone Put Your Hand Out has a magnificent falsetto middle 8.
"When you say we will dance 'til the light of day It's just like the children running with joy When we pray will you promise me you'll always stay It's because I'm needing that someone"
And then it goes into those jazzy trumpets.... ahhhhh, perfection!

I think Heal The World has a beautiful bridge section, both lyrically and melodically. I'm surprised no-one else has voted for this:
I voted for:
Speed Demon Morphine Heartbreaker Heal The World Will You Be There

You're right, that one is beautiful (and very hard to sing!)

I am sorry I never studied music, what is a middle eight? What is a bridge, I thought they crossed rivers or gorges.

I am sorry I never studied music, what is a middle eight? What is a bridge, I thought they crossed rivers or gorges. A middle eight or bridge section is the part that usually comes after the second chorus. Not every song has one, but a lot of them do.
So for example, a song like Heal The World is structured as follows:
Verse 1 "There's a place in your heart and I know that it is love..." etc
Chorus 1 "Heal the world, make it a better place...." etc
Verse 2 "If you want to know why, there's a love that cannot die...." etc
Chorus 2 Same as chorus 1
Middle-eight/bridge section: "And the dream we were conceived in will reveal a joyful face..." etc
Then after "be God's glow" it goes back into the third and final verse.
Hope that clarifies it for you triumph1976.

Just a little question, you're talking about a bridge, right? Or is it something other than that?

^^ Yes, a bridge or a middle eight section (they're the same thing really). I thought they were different things. Bridge connects the verse to the chorus. so in Billie Jean's case "People always told me be careful what you do..." But the song doesn't have a middle eight.

I have heard it referred to as a bridge before, but I've also heard middle-eights be called bridges, so it all gets a bit confusing. Then some people refer to it as a b-section, and that's when I start checking out. lol
