So I started waxing poetic about how Stevie Wonder ain't my bag in the George Michael thread. I know it's borderline sacrilegious to not fawn at the altar of Stevie Wonder, and I like a few songs, but I couldn't stomach an album of the guy. It's funny because my two favourite artists of all time (MJ and Prince) both cite him as a major influence, I think MJ went so far as to name him a "musical prophet."
So who else has a legendary music artist whose music does nothing for you?

Prince.
A large portion of his output is garbage.

I second that emotion! And Paul McCartney is a terrible songwriter. I'm sorry, but he is. I know MJ gets some shit for his more saccharine-coated material, but even on his worst day he was never as corny as Macca.

In terms of legendary artists, I'm not a huge fan of Madonna, Elton John or Billy Joel. But I can see their appeal and I like a few songs from each.
How anybody can say the music of The Beatles or Stevie Wonder does nothing for them is baffling to me.

I love Superstition, As, Higher Ground, Maybe Your Baby, Pastime Paradise etc. But I could never get into his deeper cuts or albums as a whole.

Apart from a few songs, Whitney Houston. Mariah has a much stronger catalogue.

Bob Dylan is such a talented lyricist and musician but it throws me off his atrocious "singing." I prefer to listen to him when he was with the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys because he shared vocals with more skilled performers like George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty.
Diana Ross solo career, minus a few of her hits does nothing for me. I've always preferred The Supremes though I wished Florence and Mary would have had more chances to have their voices featured more prominently in their non single albums but that's what got Diana whoring her way to the top being THE indisputable star despite being the lead singer who couldn't sing (deny Flo had the best voice out of the three.)
Other female singers would be Mariah Carey or Dolly Parton, although Dolly wrote some bangers but I've never liked the country singing style.
I agree about Elton John or Prince too.

I never really thought too much about Diana Ross's vocal prowess, but now you mention it, even though she has some great tracks, her voice is paper thin.

I know The Supremes, the vocal female group was huge in the 60s and the girls were able to rival The Beatles success in The States, if I'm not mistaken but Diana Ross as a solo act, I don't get why she was so successful in the 70s and early 80s. As I've mentioned, she's not precisely the most skilled vocalist, when she was in her prime she couldn't dance on her own even if her life depended on it (she doesn't have a strong stage presence and when she tried to dance, she looked stiff) unless she rehearsed a lot and was led by more talented dancers like Michael and she never composed any of the songs she sang. I've said before I don't have an issue with performers who don't write their songs but at least they have shown talents in other areas; Whitney and Céline are/were powerhouse vocalists, Céline likes to dance and does it okay in her concerts and both of them have/had a strong stage presence. The explanations I can think of about Diana's legend status is the great success with The Supremes and that creative people in the industry wrote and produced for her some great tracks.

She did have some great solo tracks, albeit she probably had little to do with their creation and they could've been sung by anyone and been just as great (unlike songs like MITM or Human Nature, where the songwriter was just as fortunate to have MJ perform their work as he was to get these tracks). Diana and Berry Gordy were a thing, weren't they? Probably explains a lot.

Would love to like Bowie a lot more than I do.
I get certain songs but he mostly leaves me cold. I get why he's a legend but I don't get anything from him
I wish I did.
