Inspired by russtcb's latest vinyl vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSRgto5FpdQHere's my list: 1. Kylie Minogue - Dreams (from Impossible Princess) 2. Black Sabbath - Buried Alive (from Dehumanizer) 3. Scott Weiland - Circles (from Blaster) 4. Tori Amos - 1000 Oceans (from To Venus & Back) 5. Michael Jackson - Smile (from HIStory) That was actually really hard to narrow it down to just 5. There's at least five more I could've picked just off the top of my head (GNR - Rocket Queen, Velvet Revolver - Loving The Alien, Stone Temple Pilots - Atlanta, Prince - Sometimes It Snows In April, Kate Bush - Get Out Of My House).

A Day in the Life is my most favourite. The rest are in no particular order.
A Day in the Life - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles)I think this is one of the greatest songs ever made, and I have a strong recollection of riding the bus not long after I first heard this album. I was re-playing this song and the "Aaahhh" part at 2:48 came on, and I just remember seeing my whole life flashing before my eyes and ugh. It hit me on another level. But aside from the song being a spectacular masterpiece, the final chord of this song is not only one of the greatest endings to a song ever, but one of the greatest endings to an album ever as well. The sheer, sustained power of it leaves you in silence as you reflect on what you just experienced. I honestly listen to the song and then when it ends I just think how nothing can top this. You just hear that chord and go "Now that was an ending". Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five - Band on the Run (Wings) Spotify says I played this song 231 times last year haha. So many times I've played this song and just been left blown away by the ending, the way Paul and his band just keeps building and building and building to this crescendo... and then suddenly an orchestra jumps in and blows it apart with a bang as it keeps reaching and reaching and reaching... unless finally you blast off into space and you're left utterly speechless, as the Band on the Run medley plays... as if you're finishing the ride at Disneyland and you're hearing the lobby music, telling you the ride is now over and to please get off. Just amazing stuff. I've literally played this song before and just taken off my headphones, sitting there in stunned silence as I wonder how the hell someone even comes up with something like that haha.
So It Goes - Swimming (Mac Miller) One of my most favourite Mac Miller songs, and haunting too as it's not only the final song on Mac's final album, but it was the "ascension to heaven" section was posted on his Instagram story not long before he passed away. That was the final thing he ever shared with the world. This song gets me in a certain mood that has me reflecting on my life, the people in it and the memories I have made and hope to make. It's all topped off with the aforementioned "ascension to heaven" section that has me feeling like I'm rising up through into the great beyond until I'm floating and everything just dissolves. Got me teary once or twice. Crazy stuff. Miss that guy.
There's a bonus too. His next album would be the posthumous 'Circles'. The album begins with the titular track and the way that song starts... you just feel like you're floating above everything... like you're in space or on your way to heaven or something something. It's a beautiful continuation.
Lost in the World - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Kanye West) I absolutely love the production on this track and how at times the distorted overpowering nature of it further empowers the theme of being overwhelmed and lost, not knowing what you want to do or who you want to be. It makes you want to break free of your life. Then how more voices kick in for the final chorus, making you realise you're not alone in your mental anguish. We're all going through something. There is so many interpretations of this song, but I suppose that's how I've taken it. It's one of my most favourite Kanye songs and I just love the way the instrumental continues playing underneath the short poetic "Who Will Survive In America" conclusion that follows. Oh yeah and there's also something about that slightly off-pitched screaming in the background that triggers something in the primitive side of your mind. It's incredible. A World Alone - Pure Heroine (Lorde) With Lorde being roughly around my age and both of us being from Aotearoa New Zealand, Pure Heroine was an album that really struck a chord with me upon release as it dealt with many themes relevant to what I was going through. Around that time too I was closing a big chapter in my life and I was cutting quite a few people out of my life - people were "friends" but not really friends either. The kind who would put up with you and act nice to your face, but excluded you elsewhere and talked shit behind your back. I was quite lost at the time, but I found a lot of comfort in the very few friends I had, particularly my very best friend. She's the kind of friend you have that when you're with her or talking to her, you really couldn't care less about those others because she's just that fucking great. Similarly the song 'A World Alone' is quite fittingly the final song on the album because it feels like a sunset, the closing of a chapter and maybe even the end of the world... but really you're moving onto greater pastures and best of all, you have your best friend next to you. And that's all that really matters in this world.
"Let 'em talk, 'cause we're dancing in this world alone World alone, we're alone All the double-edged people in schemes They make a mess, then go home and get clean You're my best friend and we're dancing in a world alone A world alone, we're all alone"
Lorde's songwriting is nothing short of phenomenal here, and it's really the kind of song that has you celebrating your 'tribe' in life, the people who truly understand you. โIโm the one you tell your fears to / thereโll never be enough of usโ
I probably don't play this song as much as I used to, but every time I do I'm just left appreciating those closest to me in life.

Bonus: The End - Abbey Road (The Beatles) I was going to include this on the list above but I wanted to limit the amount of Beatles shit on it so consider it a bonus ๐ 'The End' was the final, proper (non-hidden) song on Abbey Road, the final album recorded by The Beatles and also the final new song collectively recorded by all four Beatles. To me, it's not only a phenomenal closure to the B-side medley of the album, but it's also an incredibly satisfying end to their career together. Beginning with the only drum solo Ringo Starr would ever do, each member of The Beatles is allowed to shine here as they're all given their own unique sections on the track that allows them to reflect their personalities, giving a sort of "Credits" feel to it all. The song is entirely instrumental - bar the one line that ends the song that I think to me wonderfully sums up The Beatles in one line. "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make". Just fucking incredible.
Okay yeah, technically, the song is followed by 14 seconds of silence and then the very tiny snippet 'Her Majesty' plays, but I consider it the equivalent of an 'after credits scene' since if anything since it wasn't originally meant to be there in the final mix and ended up being one of music's very first hidden tracks

Absolute genius, yes, but it's a medley really, as opposed to individual songs.

But nah, I think there's different ways to look at the song. Some people like you see it as part of a medley and therefore it all being one long final song, whereas others like me see it as both a song and part of the medley. Even Wikipedia sees it as such ("and is the final song of the medley that constitutes the majority of side two of the album."). I get both viewpoints.
Either way, be it all of 'The Long One' or 'The End', fantastic way to close the album

Either way, be it all of 'The Long One' or 'The End', fantastic way to close the album Weaving all those little music fragments together the way they did was just fantastic. I'm not the biggest Beatles nut, but any time someone denies their genius, I would point them in the direction of the last half of Abbey Road for an example of their brilliance.
