We’ve seen footage of his bare chest in the bad era, and then there’s the photoshoot of him in the ripped t shirt, underwear and leg warmers, but there’s no blotches, just even looking light brown skin. Did he use body makeup or what? I never got a full answer for that in the past and I’m sure it’s not just me who wondered about it. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe he had it, I just wanted to know how it evolved

When that picture of Michael posing semi nude by Greg Gorman came out in a photo exhibition in Berlin, Karen said she did a full body makeup for that photoshoot. He may had had darker blotches of pigment left but she said the disease was affecting his whole body. I don't know if it is the glass reflection but he definitely looks fully caked in brown makeup. Many fans thought at the time the picture seemed fake but judging Karen's Polaroid, he has the same hair and ripped white shirt.

Over time, it would have been harder and harder to hide it with makeup. On the Victory tour, you can see brown makeup on his dressing table, he'd put that on his hands and neck regularly. And continued that to the end of the 1980s.

you pretty much got your answer from two other users. he was using make up all the way until the early 90's. i think michael had fast active vitiligo. he had it as an child starting off small from looking at his finger tips.
from 1970 to 1990 yeah, that's about 20 years until it fully cover him.
there been rumors he bleach his skin. but if he did it wouldn't be right to judge him. he probably did it to even out his skin. i don't believe he did but people have their own opinions and i'm not michael i wasn't there what he did and not do to his body and it really isn't none of my business.
michael knew he was black and loved his culture. he was always an black man.
vitiligo or any disorder affect people differently. it probably was more fast active after all the stress he when through after the pepsi accident. it isn't for sure it could be one of the reasons.
he also had lupus as well. at the end of the day michael was beautiful inside out. miss him.🕊🕊🕊🕊
prince michael has it too but his seems not so fast active. it may not affect him as much like his father but he still young. it's runs in the family so if prince, bigi (blanket), or paris have biological children in the future some of their children will have it too.
even michael grandfather had it.

It's noticeable Michael had lighter blotches on his chest in these pictures. It also seems he had makeup stains washed out from the sweat.

this thread is a year old.
i realize that it could be possible Michael bleach his skin. not because he didn't want to be black but to even out his skin.
the medication he was using on his skin to help even out does bleach the skin. he probably didn't know.
at the end of day Michael was a black man.
i think if Michael told early on people would have known, but he didn't.

So you believe his skin got gradually lighter because of bleaching, and he possibly leading to light brown makeup, all over the body? I always assumed he bleached in the early 90s cause he still looked somewhat dark 1990-91 right up to the 91 oscars and the dangerous album commercial in the desert

To clarify, I meant he bleached in order to make it easier so he doesn’t have to rely on makeup to even out the skin. I didn’t mean I felt he tried to be white though I was confused about what he had done in the early 90s though I was young and remember him when he was dark, but that’s another topic. I do think the moonwalk book would have been perfect for addressing it, but he just said people thought he did stuff to his skin without explaining it further. I also think he was old school and not socialized to talk about sharing his health while today it’s more common among celebrities

Yes, addressing it would have really helped, instead of complaining about people saying he’s trying to be white in the moonwalk book. I’m sure if he talked about it and brought awareness, people would have been more understanding, cause he was so loved. But I guess maybe he thought he could control it
