At this point, the people of Ukraine have an absolute right to feel betrayed by the United States. Washington, after all, did a lot to persuade Ukraine to give up their nuclear weapons in exchange for a guarantee security against future Russian military action. Biden is literally telling the Ukrainian people they're not worth defending by their military, but their neighbours who are NATO members will be defended. The United States and, indeed, Europe have a moral duty to defend Ukraine. Disgusting attitude from the Biden White House.

I read this excerpt in an article earlier written well before the Russian invasion of Ukraine:
Biden was absolutely wrong to run away from Afghanistan and he's absolutely wrong to run away from Ukraine.

It's less a fear of nuclear war and more a fear of going toe to toe with the Russian military. During the Cold War, it was theorised in war games that European armies wouldn't even last a day against an invading Russian army. That's why the US Army, Navy and Airforce are important against the Russians. But together, we cannot take on Russia and China. The US being reluctant to engage militarily will ultimately signal the decline of American power. Permanently. Russia and, especially China, will emerge as the new dominant super power. Yes. Putin chose this moment because he knows the West is just all huffing and puffing but won't do anything. In the US there's a growing sentiment both on the right and on the left that the US should mind its own domestic issues and stop spending so much money on being "the policeman of the world". But this will come with an inevitable decline (I would say also economically, not just militarily). Which is too bad for the world because Russia and China will come into the vacuum. And Europe in itself is weak, dependent on the US. I wonder if this will be a wakeup call for Europe to start spending more on defense again. Because obviously, we can't forever rely on the US. And I'm sure China is taking notes right now. If Russia can pull this shit without too serious consequences, they will be able to pull the same thing on Taiwan. And then there's Iran (also a Russia/China ally) developing nuclear arms with its religious fanatic leadership... Things aren't going in a good direction. I should really have pointed out that the Russian poisonings in Salisbury, England and the UK's resulting weak sanctions on Russia for that was a harbinger of what was to come. Crimea was inevitable after Putin saw a load of strong words and handwringing following Salisbury. Today, I have to say I am ashamed of being a Westerner in the face of Russian aggression. Too many Westerners more worried about being inconvenienced by rising energy costs than death in Ukraine. Yes, China will be eyeing Taiwan and the South China Sea areas even more now. This has immense security implications not only for the likes of the Philippines and Indonesia. But also for New Zealand and Australia. Especially since the Aussies agreed a security deal with the USA and UK instead of France. Hard to believe the West is dropping the ball massively. If Putin succeeds in dropping a new Iron Curtain on Ukraine, what might that suggest for former Iron Curtain countries, NATO members or not, in future?

Hope that is true! It's clear the war isn't going as well as Russia expected. Ukraine is putting up a real fight! 137 Ukrainian deaths to 450 Russian military deaths.

Russia's ruthlessness doesn't surprise me and Putin knows that kind of thing is likely to make the West meekly give in. It might well be that the West will have to match ruthlessness with ruthlessness eventually. That said, it's more likely we'll give in and Putin will become emboldened.
