So it was... good. Some really puzzling parts. You mean the TikTok and BTS parts? Or the odd pro estate projects segment over the end credits? π Yeah, it was just ok IMO. Could have been much better, but some nice rare footage and audio segments made it worthwhile. A more talented filmmaker could have done so much more. I need to see Sonic Fantasy. Maybe that will scratch some of the itches Thriller 40 didn't.

BTW, MTV Europe will have several returns of it in the coming days. For example, tomorrow morning as well.

The doc was pretty meh. New footage was great but some of the stuff was very lq for seemingly no reason and was clearly ripped from somewhere online. Talking heads really bore me unless they actually have a reason to be there and a few of them didn't.
The doc is mostly really not aimed at anyone who actually knows anything about MJ, which is fine, but not really something that will ever appeal to me personally.
Just my opinion.

I watched it and I quite enjoyed it. I think it was well structured and with everything covered, not just the album itself and the songs, but the videos, MJ as a dancer, as a songwriter, the commercial success. Obviously these posthumous documentaries unfortunately lack the contribution of the protagonist, ie. fresh interviews with MJ, but this one used some footage and interviews from archives that I don't think have seen/heard before so that was a great thing. I know John Landis is kind of a douche, but here I pretty much liked his segment, he was entertaining. The weird thing was the use of low quality footage at times, like ripped from low quality YouTube videos. I don't know why the Estate didn't go to the owner/source of such footage and ask to use the originals. This was a bit amateurish. Eventually I think most talking heads had their place. I liked the musicians who worked on Thriller, the ballet dancer talking about MJ as a dancer, and John Landis' segment the most of the talking heads.
Overall I think I liked it more than the Spike Lee documentaries, but I will need some distance to make a final decision on that.

The documentary was everything. Whoever thinks otherwise is just downplaying Thriller era and what he did for black artists
