So....you enjoying it then? I'd recommend everyone get their free month for this alone. It's beautiful! I assumed it would be gimmicky shit. It's almost like you shouldn't have presumed it was all going to be shit. Obviously I'm 50% winding you up.

Hmm, maybe it's just an apple music thing. That's really strange. Maybe apple mix it the same way they have those "remastered for apple" messages? I'm hearing vocals and wolves I've never heard before in Thriller. The organ at the end is so loud. Loads more vocals at the end just there! Feels like I'm travelling the multiverse. Apple don't touch anything on the mix, the whole Apple Digital Masters thing is essentially a process that Apple have worked on to ensure that it's as faithful as they can get it when it's transcoded for streaming services, you can read about it here (if you google for it, Apple also have a pretty in-depth paper on their website about the whole process). From everything you're describing, I'm pretty sure you're listening to the new Spatial Audio/Atmos mix on Apple Music, because they haven't remixed the album for stereo. I think it's enabled by default for music that supports it and if you're using the right audio setup/headphones. If they did remix it for stereo, then that would be represented across all the streaming services, not just Apple. However there would be a new mix for Dolby Atmos, which would explain why the organ at the end may be louder or you're hearing the vocals stacked differently, or sounds that were blended in before may sound more separated and pronounced now. There were also rumours a while back that his music was being remixed for this format. I don't have AM right now, but I remember when Spatial Audio came out I listened to some tracks on my Dad's laptop that I was familiar with (he has AM), and again when I got a trial a little while ago and I had similar experiences to you since the songs I was familiar with were mixed a bit differently to make use of the wider space. Never really bought into the whole ~spatial~ thing though, like feeling things move up, down, front, back etc. I'm sure it works great on a proper Dolby Atmos surround sound speaker setup, but on a pair of headphones? I wasn't convinced at the time.

The collage of screenshots from the 480p versions of the short films doesn't help either... I was wondering if they'd be from the new restorations or not... how do you know? That photo I reposted above isn't great quality in the first place so it's hard to tell there. Lol yup, you're right SoCav . The picture I reposted earlier was low quality, but these high quality videos of the Thriller 40 CD booklet/LP gatefold reveal images from the SD versions 🤦🏼♂️ See Beat It @ 4:28: And here @ 2 minutes:

I can't believe this shit. So the Estate is basically fighting against Sony trying to do promote this campaign? WTF is going on? Someone on MJJC was theorizing that the Estate was playing it safe due to potential backlash, and I could see that being the case here. I remember when Xscape came out there seemed to be decent promotion for it... and then Safechuck's allegations hit the news literally days before the album's release and it just seemed to put a damper on things. When the single for A Place With No Name came out, the details of his accusations hit the news about the same time. The timing of both of these felt very... calculated. The Estate gave up on the album after that. I know people will say that no one cares about LN anymore, but never underestimate the power the media has, especially the social media. A few well placed posts and hashtags and it'll be in the public consciousness again. Then again... if the Estate cared about that I have to wonder why they even bothered with this in the first place. And I'm not over that ugly ass logo. Ugh... is there such a thing as custom vinyl record sleeves? I'll gladly pay for one just to have a less shitty logo.

I don't think LN is a good excuse for this mess. The fact is Thriller is one of Sony's most reliably selling flagship albums. It doesn't seem to have been affected by LN. From Sony's own business report about Q3 of 2022 (so before T40, just from the general, organic sales of the album). www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/sony-generated-2-15bn-from-recorded-music-and-publishing-in-calendar-q3/A 40 yo album among all the albums of current artists! There's really no reason to act like this album is some sort of risk when it's one of Sony's most constant selling catalog albums. It's an album that people love and buy constantly, it would be nice if they had treated it the royal way it deserves in this campaign. I also don't believe the promotion of Xscape was affected much by Safechuck, although their timing was deliberate and IMO they did intend to hurt that project. But Safechuck hardly got attention outside the hardcore fandom at the time. I think they stopped promoting because sales haven't been what they expected, but that had nothing to do with Safechuck but all to do with the fiasco with the previous album (Cascio songs) and that the relationship between fans and the Estate hasn't healed ever since.

If anyone needs proof of the botch job, just compare Carousel on T40 with either the KOP or Thriller SE versions (or the leak). That's a significant drop in audio quality. It sounds so horribly muffled.
Listening on an Amazon Echo. No fancy headphones needed. Shocking master here
Edit: listening on Spotify
The HD version on Qubuz is being ripped apart on the Steve Hoffman forum. Carousel and CGOOTR in particular. I think alleged audiophile albums with negative feedback based on their quality get removed. I'll admit CGOOTR doesn't sound as bad as Carousel does.
