Also everyone goes on about the British Royal Family, but imagine if MJ and Lisa Marie actually stayed together and had a kid? A kid who’s father was the King of Pop and their grandfather was the King of Rock’n’Roll!! Now THAT would be music royalty! …I wouldn’t want to imagine the pressures on that kid if they wanted to get into music though yeesh. It’s bad enough for children who has one famous musician parent haha. I wish they had stayed and MJ could have had a real family, but on the other hand being MJ's child and Elvis's grandchild would probably be a very heavy burden for a person to bear. I imagine that child would be in the center of tabloid attention right from their birth, even more so than MJ's children were. MJ did a good job hiding his children from the media, but I don't want to imagine the frenzy and paparazzi race for a photo if it was a Jackson-Presley kid.

He certainly was on fire and re-invigorated here, but I must say I wasn't a fan of the medley and the new arrangements of those 50's songs with the corny (IMO) orchestration. He does do probably the best ever version of Love Me Tender during the stand up shows though. Yeah I'm with you there. Elvis is in great form there, but the arrangements are so cheesy in places, it's a bit distracting for me too. Just imagine he'd already had the TCB band backing him instead... wow. Still, I really enjoy some parts of the stand-up shows. The interaction with the crowd is great. I also like the Trouble/Guitar Man portion at the end, mainly because of the cool delivery of Trouble and the extra verse on Guitar Man ("well I've come a long way from the car wash...") which felt really appropriate for the special. Oh, and while it's not from the stand-up shows, I always wish he'd recorded a longer version of Nothingville - that's a great bluesy track that had lots of potential. Don’t know if I can generalise my opinion to the degree you say here, I think because there are live performances I prefer more, and then there are rehearsals I prefer more. It varies a bit. But what you said about Michael got me thinking about that one show where he performed Earth Song. I think the Brunei show? Anyway, he’s out there all by himself, standing in white and his microphone is live. No longer lip syncing, he starts clapping and singing “Tell me what about it! Tell me what about us!”. And it’s just so simple, so raw, so powerful. It’s really moving, and I think it’s safe to say it’s by far my favourite moment of any HIStory show. Man, what a moment! I enjoy the theatrics, but sometimes simplicity can be king. Oh yeah, that moment from the Royal Concert, it's great. I'm not a huge fan of the theatrics anyway, but performers like Michael and Elvis were so amazing that it feels like even more of a shame when they rely on it - they so do not need it! It's in their more spontaneous moments that their raw talent and charisma really shines the most. It's for that same reason that Human Nature was the highlight of This Is It for me, and why I loved moments like at the 2003 BET Awards, where MJ (probably not wanting to refuse his idol JB) cut loose for a few seconds. It's the same with Elvis when he really gets into a song or really feels it during rehearsals. I'm a huge fan of the theatrics. They might not have needed it, but it's still cool as hell. Since you mention this is it, my favorite moment is Thriller. Love that whole thing that that they did with the zombies and the spider. But maybe I don't understand what you mean exactly, because Elvis never did the kind of things that MJ did when performing? For example, the magic tricks (WDAN, Thriller), the whole tank scene at the end of Earth Song, the guy with the mask in Thriller, the end of MITM (Dangerous tour). Those are things I consider theatric. The mos theatric thing I can think of that Elvis did, was having the guitar around his neck that he didn't even play. As for MJ, I think it's one of his talents as well, to have those theatrics in his shows. There's plenty of times during his concerts where he shows his raw talent and charisma without those theatrics, and I think having both in a concert is awesome
But maybe the word has a completely different meaning than what I understand?

Did I kill the thread? Anyway, I watched the 68 comeback special yesterday for the first time in idk how many years? 5? 10? idk. But what great fun it was to watch it again, and it brought back so many memories of me and my best friend (who made me an Elvis fan, may he RIP), watching it together I'm on an Elvis buzz (thanks to the new movie, which I've seen 3 times now) at the moment. I watched That's The Way It Is not that long ago, so I think I'll watch Aloha From Hawaii next. Or maybe one of his movies? I don't know yet. We'll see. But I like his movies. I don't care what anyone says, I like them

Did you know that in my country we have our very own version of Graceland? Well, the outside anyway! Inside is an Elvis museum, diner and shop! It's called Memphis Mansion. Been there. Great place! Check them out www.memphismansion.com/

I don't care what anyone says, I like them Jailhouse Rock and King Creole are both truly great movies that really show off Elvis' acting potential. I never tire of watching those. Loving You is also decent and we get to see 50's Elvis in colour! The 60's movies on the whole are pretty bad and Elvis should never have been stuck doing such horrible material for so long, but I do have some guilty pleasures amongst them. Blue Hawaii, Tickle Me, Double Trouble, Clambake, Stay Away Joe and maybe a few others.

I'd love to go to Graceland some day. Now doesn't seem like the best time though for a number of reasons. Maybe in 5 to 10 years.

I agree that some are better than others..but to me the worst of them all is Viva Las Vegas. it's soooooo fucking boring! Fell asleep that one time I tried watching it If I had to choose a favorite (which is hard), it's probably Fun In Acapulco. And it's only because of the kid (Raoul), which is stupid, I know. But I can't help it, he's so funny. And I love kids who can act/sing. And together with Elvis? Priceless and so cute I'm a little embarrassed about saying that. haha I'm so lame, I know...

I'm not big on Viva Las Vegas but it has some good scenes and Ann Margret is gorgeous. You reminded me with the child actor thing... It Happened at the World's Fair is also a guilty pleasure. Though it doesn't always work as Paradise Hawaiin Style clearly shows.

Back to the music. One of my favourites. From the 1969 American Sound sessions. Elvis on the piano in an impromptu one take performance.

To me the most magical aspect of live performances is when you see a performer lose themselves in their music, and I feel that aspect tends to get lost among all the theatrics. Of course you are right that Elvis never came close to the extremes MJ hit, but even though he did not have a tank driving on stage or resort to lipsyncing, I do think he sometimes got lost in playing up to the Elvis image - the jumpsuits, the handkerchiefs, the kisses, the sometimes overblown arrangements. To me it just seemed like that would get in between him and the music at times. But again, it's purely a matter of preference.
