These were the only 2 compilations of MJ's adult solo years until The Essential Michael Jackson was released in 2005, but which single disc compilation do you prefer and why? I prefer the HIStory one. I think it just flows better to listen to straight through. No single edits, and does exactly what it says on the tin. Break of Dawn was always jarring to me. One More Chance isn't the best song, but I still quite like it. Michael Jackson - Greatest Hits: HIStory Volume 1 (2001) Michael Jackson - Number Ones (2003)

They both have their pluses and minuses.
I like that HIStory Vol 1 has no crappy single edits (Earth Song and Thriller single edits especially were an abomination). But the tracklisting isn't the best. No Smooth Criminal on his first Greatest Hits album? Who made that call? I prefer the cover art for HIStory Vol 1 though.
I hate the single edits on Number Ones and the cover is a bit cheap looking. But the tracklisting is much, much better. Takes off She's Out Of My Life, The Girl Is Mine and Heal The World and replaces them with Human Nature, Smooth Criminal and Dirty Diana. That's a good call right there. Then you have the HIStory singles, YRMW and a brand new MJ song (and I've always really liked OMC). The inclusion of BOD was bizarre. I've heard fan theories that MJ was planning on releasing it as a follow-up single to OMC, but I don't know how true that is.
Overall, despite it's underwhelming tracklist, I still think I'd pick HIStory Vol 1 over Number Ones. One felt like a true career retrospective, the other a record label cash-in.

Number Ones because at least it gave us a new song. And SC and Dirty Diana are two of his best songs from the 80s which were conspicuously missing from HIStory Greatest Hits.
Although only one song from Dangerous on Number Ones was my biggest gripe with that one.

Hobson's choice.
Both totally unrepresentative of his best work. But at least HIStory has an excuse. Bar Smooth Criminal that is.
The Essential is the only truly representative compilation of his best (single edits aside).

Am I the only one who prefers the tracklist of HIStory Vol 1? Yes, no SC is a mistake, but you have Remember The Time, The Girl Is Mine, Heal The World and She's Out Of My Life in all their glory and no horrid radio edits.

Iโll go with HIStory. I absolutely loved it when it was released and it flows so well. I think the track selection really compliments the new songs on disc two in terms of production also. Listening to discs one and two back to back is majestic!

The thing with HIStory Begins aka Greatest Hits Vol 1 is the 15 were his biggest selling hits in the USA and UK markets.
That's how SC and DD didn't make the cut.
Number Ones is, by far, the most popular of his hits compilation and will eventually outsell OTW plus HIStory, respectively.
I like both for different reasons, but since Number Ones is lagging in the poll......

I certainly think so. There was something celebratory about the UK Deluxe Edition of King Of Pop, for me at least. Between February and August 2008 we had Thriller25 and King Of Pop. So many rarities on it for an MJ release as well.
