What went wrong with the hyped up movie "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody"?
Can we say that the $45M musical biopic "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody" is officially a flop? It's been in the planning stages for years, had a talented cast, had Whitney singing throughout the 2.5 hour film. It opened Christmas weekend and has only taken in $22M at the domestic box office, with a Metascore of 51. $22M - which is around what it was projected to take in the holiday weekend it opened (instead, it took in less than $5M in the USA and Canada).
I didn't see much promotion for this movie except television ads in December. None of the cast (to my knowledge) did much press or TV interviews. No one did 'The View' which would have had Whoopi, Sara and Sunny gush all over it.
Houston had / still has a huge fanbase. Has everyone lost interest ?

I haven't seen it, but the trailer made it look light hearted and like it would skip all the dark stuff and I think people decided they'd rather not waste their time on a censored, family-sanctioned, sanitized version of what was a messy waste of a life.
This is why an MJ biopic is a terrible idea. Not every life story can be wrapped up in a 90 minute, family friendly package with a great pop soundtrack, least of all MJs.

Even seeing the trailers I never had any interest. Looked very "direct to VHS".

I think Whitney has a more narrow audience appeal than Queen or Elton or Elvis. The younger generation don't really know her or care for her dated music and the only people from the older generation who listen to her are now white housewives in their mid-50s. The gays, the hipsters, under 35s, many blacks folks (who deem her music too white) and men in general have nada interest in Whitney Houston.

Had no idea it flopped. I think sheโs still very popular though, and still gets played on the radio often

I saw it. It was okay. I wasn't happy about the casting, but the actress playing Whitney did a solid job. As did Tamera Tunie from Law and Order SVU. The music alone makes it worth seeing but I think it flopped for several reasons. One - people don't go to the movies like they do pre pandemic. Also, a lot of people don't like Pat Houston (her sister in law and executor of the WH estate) or Clive Davis. Many diehard fans boycotted it because of that.
There's a feeling that her estate does things purely for money amongst a lot of fans. The fans don't like this so they tend to not support the projects.

Whitney was dead in the hotel tub right before Grammy Week began, correct? Please tell me Madame Tussaud has recreated the scene for guests as they enter the lobby.... And Bobbie Kristina has her own tub exhibit in the pop up memorabilia shop!
