When I was younger, I loved it. I believed it was so amazing and made my parents watch it with me on more than one occasion.
Now? Oh my god it's ridiculous. It's still an entertaining watch, don't get me wrong, but what's even going on? He turns into a car like an animorph. Then a giant robot. Then into a spaceship. He isn't just piloting the spaceship, no no, he is the spaceship. ?
But wait, at the beginning there's this whole retrospective into MJs musical career capped off with a remake of the Bad MV performed by children. Then he's chased around some soundstages by some California raisins rejects before becoming a claymation rabbit on a high-speed motorcycle chase, which ends with MJ having a dance-off with the now autonomous rabbit costume. The rabbit's face morphs out of a canyon and then we get the Leave Me Alone music video, and the following segment has absolutely nothing to do with the elapsed events.
Now we're in a random city? Three random children and MJ appear to be the only inhabitants of the neighbourhood because absolutely nobody responds or reacts to the machine-gun shootout and subsequent foot chase that occurs. Then there's the villain, Frankie LiDeo (Frank DiLeo? Hello?) being that exact guy that all the children's drug PSAs and school assemblies warned us about. Cue the aforementioned car transformation, a Smooth Criminal dance break and then more machine guns. Then Michael Jackson gets kicked in the face and turns into Megatron.
Absolute chaos. I highly recommend watching this with someone who has never seen it. Trust me, it's hysterical.

Well, I don't think it was trying to be Schindlers List...

Funny how you described it like we haven't seen it before

As a kid, I just saw it as a fun, escapist ride. Watched and rewound that VHS so many times I'm amazed the tape never snapped once!
As an adult, I view it similarly with the added view that Moonwalker is really about Michael's dreams and nightmares.

I liked it better as a teenager than as an adult. It does seem ridiculous now though the parts other than the smooth criminal scenes before and after the routine are what I prefer

I consider it an MJ fan cult movie that's obviously not as enjoyable for non-fans as for fans. Yes, the story is VERY basic, childish and ridiculous and probably not very enjoyable for anyone who expects it to be a traditional movie. But personally - gimme Moonwalker over any popular superhero movie! At least this this one has good music. I consider it more a musical fantasy than a traditional movie. It's fun. The music videos are top notch. I definitely prefer it to The Wiz or Captain EO.

I agree with respect's assessment about the plot and story but it's greatly compensated with the music and its top notch shorts. Moonwalker is for MJ fans and only us would understand it and enjoy it.
It has my favorite Man In The Mirror performance, yeah I know it's a collage of other shows but I still prefer it to the Grammys version.
Smooth Criminal is one of the best masterpieces ever created which makes me feel heartbroken Fred Astaire wasn't able to see it. It's probably the best tribute I've seen to Fred, knowing Astaire himself considered Michael a worthy successor.
Come Together tops Dirty Diana in sexiness and created concert like atmosphere.
And it has Joe Pesci as a menacing villain. George Carlin was right: "You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Two reasons: First of all, I think he's a good actor, okay? To me, that counts. Second, he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with."

Funny how you described it like we haven't seen it before lmao I know, I was mostly writing it down to emphasize the absurdity of it all
I definitely still find myself using it as a comfort movie now and again. It's definitely a film you can enjoy on a surface level, with its visual interest and good music. The Smooth Criminal segment is my favourite by far, even the weird quiet interpretive screaming portion

I love the Grammy 1988 performance just the same, but I agree that the Moonwalker version of MITM is everything. Definitely better than the official music video.

And what a start it is to the movie! MJJ's cool logo and then boom, this fantastic version of MITM!

It's funny this topic comes up. I was just trying to describe the movie to my wife the other day because she's never seen it.
I own the blu-ray, so she'll see it soon. But in the meantime, I was trying to find a way to describe it and I couldn't. In short, it just seems like a bunch of fun disjointed "skits" for lack of a better term.

There's really no overarching narrative, which makes it confusing. Actually, in the credits, the parts of the movie are referred to as the "Anthology Segments" (MITM, Retrospective, Badder, Speed Demon, Leave Me Alone, Come Together, The Moon is Walking (end credits)) and "Smooth Criminal," Which is just kinda plopped within the Anthology segments.

I always watched the film intermittently and in scenes. But I bought it on Blu-ray recently and watched it all with my mother who really liked it. I liked it too, it was cool, not as bad as some people say (they talk about an interstellar void but they haven't seen Black Widow from 2020). The film itself is quite nice but it was super long.
I didn't really like the short film, I especially liked the beginning with the retrospective (which I never saw and which touched me in fact). Already I would have seen Michael more as a badass villain with his dimple in the chin and his long curly black hair. He should have played the role of the classy mafia drug dealer, not Joe Pesci!
I love parodying it by imagining that Michael is the bad guy and Joe is the good guy. Michael looks like a mafia boss and badboy kick-ass sexy bootay!
However, I completely rewatched the film a while ago when I came across a video that talked about it. It was a pretty stunning interpretation of this film made by a French YouTuber who was a fan of Michael Jackson. I'm too lazy to explain it now but if you really want to know I can do the topos and provide the link to the video.
This video completely changed the way I perceive the film. In hindsight, this is a prediction about Michael's life (lost childhood, future, etc...).
Special mention for the way you told the film Seven. It was just comical.
