It's such an underrated track I think. And I have been listening to various fan made extended mixes on youtube and I just noticed that it's got such layered wall of funk metal electronic elements. And the vocals are of course like velvety smooth on the background. And michael's solo lead vocals can challenge any well respected rock singer's.
I think all responses to this thread should be all capital letters and end with exclamqtion mark in respect to the song's theme. SO DISCUSS SCREAM!

Even at times when the songs genre wasn't actually rock, he spits venom in such a way, that it really is more comparable with rock vocalists than pop singers. Sorry... I mean... I'VE ALWAYS FELT THAT MJ WAS A GREAT ROCK SINGER! EVEN AT TIMES WHEN...

I don't know where you get the "metal" influence from? Maybe "electro industrial funk"...? Some of the sounds remind me a little of Nine Inch Nails. They aren't really my kind of music, but Trent Reznor sure did know how to build some fantastic, dark, ear-shattering drum loops, which remind me somewhat of Scream. As for the song itself, it's probably my favourite MJ album opener. I still remember first hearing it, I must've been around 14/15 at the time and I had become super obsessed with MJ during the Dangerous era. When Scream hit, suddenly liking MJ was one less thing to get bullied about at school for about a month. I remember all the kids in highschool thinking it was dope and it was cool to like MJ again. It was short lived, once he took his clothes off with LMP for YANA, nobody at my school thought that was cool.

I remember when it came out and the video premiered on MTV and the VJ made a remark like "Where's the melody?". Like so many things MJ did at the time (TDCAU, Earth Song etc) I think this too was ahead of its time. The video too is absolutely phenomenal.

They aren't really my cup of tea, but Trent Reznor sure did know how to build some fantastic, dark, ear-shattering drum loops, which remind me somewhat of Scream. I think NIN was indeed an influence on him at the time. Rob Hoffman said on the Gearslutz forum MJ used to casually sing NIN songs during the making of HIStory. Morphine too, I think, is NIN inspired. (Possibly Lisa Marie's influence on him, because it's her type of music.)

I wish it existed a demo solo version at least, Janet's voice is an improvement in Scream but it's still lackluster next to her brother's since I've always found her voice so weak and whispery. Don't get me wrong, I love Scream and its short but vocally speaking Michael ate his sister alive and didn't really need her.
The HIStory concert one is the closest I'll get to a solo version. Too bad MJ's voice is so hoarse in most of the tour's duration.

Even at times when the songs genre wasn't actually rock, he spits venom in such a way, that it really is more comparable with rock vocalists than pop singers. I would kill for a straight-up rock album from MJ. Like, an entire album in the style of Give In to Me or Morphine (or both!). It'll never happen, sadly, but man... what could have been.

Yeah, it slams. Can remember thinking 'wtf is this?' the first time I heard it.

Yeah, it slams. Can remember thinking 'wtf is this?' the first time I heard it. Yeah, I remember thinking the same. Over time, I've found 'wtf is this?' to be a good initial reaction to songs from my favourite artists. It often means they're trying something new or pushing their audience outside of their comfort zones. It certainly beats the 'is that it?' or 'It's okay' reactions. Not often do I love a song on a first listen. I grew to love Scream. One of the only times I remember loving a song off the bat was when I first heard Earth Song and I was just blown away, as I think many of us were.

There is a reason that his music lives on despite all of the crap thrown his way. A truly unique artist.

Thank you. We can only wonder what made him the peculiar artist that he was. Bless him. From what I understand there was a lot of injustice around this time and it made him want to scream. Apparently he was tired of it all. But yes, I get you. πππ»
