I remember it being rumoured that MJ wanted to perform at the 2002 Grammy's, but apparently Grammy bosses wanted him to perform a greatest hit and he wanted to do a new song. I always wondered if this rumour was true, does anyone know? I like to believe it was true as it'd be nice to believe that MJ still had the fire in him to do something new at that point in his life.

Thinking about it, it may have been 2003 Grammy's, I can't recall now.

Yes it was 2002 Grammys. They wanted him to do man in the mirror. The reason he couldn’t appear I think was because he was already appearing on the AMA’s I think

No, there's no credible evidence to it. The Grammy spokesman tasked with answering questions on this didn't even know if MJ was invited to perform. Says it all. MJ simply didn't show up to the Grammys and his team dropped plans to air a video at the AMAs too. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1841582.stm

Except it mentions a new edit of the 1988 clip. That's where the MITM thing stemmed from. And it wasn't for the Grammys, but for the AMAs.
