I'm never that good at describing why I like a particular song but I'll give it a shot. Ranked from best to worst: 1. DSTGYE > one of Michael's best self-written songs. A timeless classic. Love the falsetto and the bridge. 10/10 2. Working Day And Night > One of my personal favourites, I listen to this song a lot. Great energy. 10/10 3. Rock With You > Love the way his voice sounds in this, so sultry. Whenever I hear this song I think of the music video (he looked so handsome and joyful). 9/10 4. Off The Wall > This one is on par with Rock With You. Really catchy. 9/10 5. Get On The Floor > Don't listen to this one a lot but it's a good song. Fantastic bassline. A step below the top 4 though. 7.5/10 6. I Can't Help It > Pleasant song but another one I don't listen to a lot. The type of song I wouldn't skip on a playlist but I wouldn't look for it. 7/10 7. Burn This Disco Out > A bit generic but a nice song. Reminds me of GOTF but not quite as good. 6/10 8. She's Out Of My Life > I know Michael put his heart and soul in this song but I find it a bit boring. 5/10 9. Girlfriend > If anyone else had written this song I don't think it would be on the album. It's not terrible but it's one of the weakest songs in Michael's catalogue. 4/10 10. It's The Falling In Love > Filler. Haven't listened to this song in years. Just played it again to refresh my memory and it's as bland as I thought. 4/10 My review is pretty much this. My gripe with people who claim OTW is MJs best album is, whilst there's a fair few 10/10 or near 10/10 moments front loaded in the first half of the album, the weak tracks (It's The Falling In Love, Girlfriend, She's Out Of My Life) are arguably the least interesting songs in his entire catalogue.

I agree, OTW is a mixed bag. The best songs on that album are among the best songs in his entire catalogue. But in terms of overall quality it cannot compete with Thriller, Bad or Dangerous. I would say it's on par with HIStory (that one also has some great and weak songs) and better than Invincible.

I think many people only say it's his best album out of some sort of snobbism. They won't say it's Thriller, because snobs just won't go with the best selling album of all time. They also won't say any of the non-Quincy albums, because they need to be able to tell themselves that "it's really Quincy I rate here, not MJ". And they won't go with Bad, because it's too pop (and too fun) and because MJ already was "weird" and "white". I'm not talking about those who genuinely prefer this album to everything else in his catalog. But I think there are also other reasons beyond the music, why this album is the snob favorite from his catalog. Interestingly when it comes to fan polls it's always lagging behind several other albums. And well, when it comes to general public, it's lagging behind Thriller and Bad in streaming. I agree that OTW actually has some lesser tracks and it's getting a bit weaker towards the end. While Bad and Thriller are simply perfect.

I agree that OTW actually has some lesser tracks and it's getting a bit weaker towards the end. While Bad and Thriller are simply perfect. Yeah you’re spot on actually. For music snobs it says “I’m not really an MJ fan, more a fan of real music” They also go with it for the album sleeve; a young black MJ untouched by fame and scandal, “Well… OTW was before he became weird and all that other stuff!” And it possibly occasionally pushes hardcore fans against it for the same reasons? On its own merits it’s an absolutely wonderful album and it was proven to me when my brother brought me a copy of it on vinyl back from London when I was a kid. I was completely wrapped up in Bad and Thriller. Those two albums were MJ for me at that point and I wasn’t really aware of any other MJ music save for We Are The World. I’ll never forget my brother popping this on the record player, the crackling of the LP and the intro to DSTYGE and then the “Woah” from MJ as the song/album burst into colour. It blew my mind! It absolutely blew me away! It’s hard to describe to fans who weren’t around just how perfect and golden those early years -the 80’s- were for MJ and as a young fan. Great great things came from MJ artistically in the 90’s, but 79/80’s was immense beyond anything and every album got better and better OTW>Thriller>Bad, but discovering these albums as Bad>Thriller>OTW in the 80’s, it changes you forever.
